Bunting. Fairground rides. Music… Murder. What more could you want from a garden party?

Alice Carroll is happily settled in the Cotswold village of Little Pride, running her beloved Curiosity Shop and cautiously planning the next chapter with her partner, Robert. So when Robert buys the neighbouring Cold Bottom estate, Alice offers to help him win over its eccentric residents by reviving the village’s once-loved summer garden party.

But between grumbling fairground workers, gloomy villagers and a downpour that would dampen anyone’s bunting, the day doesn’t quite go to plan.

Then a guest stumbles into the marquee – and he’s dead before his body hits the ground.

Can Alice untangle old rivalries and strange secrets to find the killer? Or will Cold Bottom’s fresh start end in another funeral?

Favorite Quotes:

…it was good for my mid-life ego to know a man who might have been a magnet for beautiful young gold diggers preferred me to a supermodel or a high-flying executive type. Not that I’d yet worked out why exactly.

Evan Bevan looked as pleased as a little boy who had just been given a free bag of sweets.

I looked down at the notes that I’d scribbled in the car as Robert drove us home. Thanks to the potholes in the private road, my usually neat handwriting looked like a seismic activity chart.

How sad to have so much, but not what you really want…

My Review:

Another fun, cozy, brain-teasing mystery with a murder happening in an eccentric hamlet in the Cotswolds. Can’t say I’d want to visit them at this one. Life in this village sounds brutal. The storylines were engaging, easy to follow, and unpredictable, with an odd cast of characters who were well fleshed out and knowable. Ms. Young kept the little pea in my brain guessing yet well entertained.

Author of murder mystery, mayhem, and comedy in the Cotswolds.

Debbie Young writes warm, witty, feel-good contemporary fiction inspired by life in the English village where she lives with her Scottish husband and their teenage daughter.
