I saw Milly standing across the hall. An older lady, somewhere between eighty and a hundred and forty, she looked like my sister’s cashmere sweater after I’d accidentally tossed it in the washing machine: wrinkled, shrunken, and shapeless. She was a fan of brassy red hair dye, velour tracksuits, and eavesdropping. I wanted to be her when I grew up.

Karin was a viper in a power suit. As far as I could tell, her idea of fun was waterboarding puppies.

His bright red hair and pale complexion also contributed to his youthful appearance. I supposed spending half his life in prison, out of the sun, was great for the skin. Was there some way to market that? I could see it now, a beauty influencer touting the benefits of incarceration as skincare.

Ian’s like a stray dog. If you’re too nice to him, he’ll never go away.

I was already thinking of ways to drive him out of the building… I’d throw away all his left shoes and dunk his toothbrush in the toilet. And that was just the warm-up.

This was a fun read that kept me gleefully entertained with sharply honed snark, oddly compelling characters, including supernatural ones, and a well-contrived mystery. The pacing was crafty and rather diabolical, keeping me eager for each tantalizing crumb of a clue. I thoroughly enjoyed both gals finding their mojo and mastering their skills. Cordelia was continually learning the rules, abilities, and limitations of being a ghost. As Cordelia’s missing memories finally unfurled, I was delighted to be so wrong in my theories of whodunit. Olivia Blacke is a clever minx with rad storytelling skills; she certainly had me fooled to the very end.

Olivia Blacke (she/her) is the Anthony Award-winning author of the Ruby and Cordelia Mysteries, as well as the cozy Record Shop Mysteries and the Brooklyn Murder Mysteries. She had her first ghost encounter when she was five, but wasn’t involved with an active crime scene until much later, when she accidentally stepped into a chalk outline on a Manhattan sidewalk. Armed with a Criminology degree, she channels her love of the supernatural and passion for writing into darkly humorous supernatural mysteries. She wants to be a unicorn when she grows up.
