The bestselling author of the “clever spine-tingler” The Secretary returns with an unputdownable thriller following a woman on a desperate search for answers after she’s institutionalized against her will.

The year is 1962, and every night Grace lays her head on her pillow at the Texas State Lunatic Hospital, she reminds herself she is not what they say she is.

Her children and her husband are not dead. They’re searching for her.

Someone knows the truth.

Strangely, that someone is hell-bent on making sure the truth stays buried.

The question is…why?

Meanwhile, Grace has bigger fish to fry, starting with her new roommate.

Elizabeth is certifiable, and she has star status—a deadly combination, Grace realizes.

The kind of woman who has everyone in the palm of her hand, Elizabeth gives even the most menacing of nurses a run for their money, takes bad intentions to a whole new level and makes crazy look seductive as hell.

Grace learns fast: the best way to deal with lunacy is to befriend it. It may be her only ticket out. She also learns there’s more to her new bunkmate than meets the eye. She’s vile, she’s cunning—and possibly faking.

The question is…why?

With riveting twists and a breakneck pace, Fever Dream is a propulsive thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Favorite Quotes:

Later, as I was lying in my bed, a strange sensation came over me. It smelled like sorrow but it had a bitter taste, a bit like revenge.

I’d heard through the grapevine that Elizabeth was here on account of her promiscuity, but no one could provide any concrete detail. It’s not an easy task to ask a woman whether she’s a whore, and if so, what that entails, exactly.

She’s too perfect. Tart and sweet, like candy. You know it’s bad for you, but you can’t help yourself.

You’ve done a lot of dumb, stupid things, no? Well, guess what? You’re not through yet. You’re gonna do some more. Might as well hurry up and get it over with… There’s always going to be a next one.

Elizabeth was a hard person to love, and a harder person not to.

My Review:

This was a prickly read that was disconcerting and alarmingly realistic. I had a hard time liking the characters as they were rather annoying and pathological creatures, yet I was fully invested and wiggling on the hook with their diabolically addictive and unpredictable storylines.

I fall for this every time as Britney King has consistently managed to do this to me. She turns me inside out and upside down and makes me like it and scream for more. I flinched and cringed throughout perusal but could not in good conscience walk away and leave them to their own devices. This was nail-gnawing and cuticle-tearing suspense… I’ll need to wear mittens in public this week.
