Kelly Collins welcomes you back to Cross Creek where love conquers all—including the secrets that haunt you…

Miranda Thomas got under my skin, in a good way. The pretty little sheriff was one-part mystery and the rest perfection. I wanted her, and I intended to make her mine. Our future was as plain as day: husband and wife with two children and a house with a white picket fence. But she was hiding something, and I needed to know what it was. If she didn’t let me in, there would be no chance for us.

Bayden Lockhart was relentless in his pursuit of me. He was like a habitual offender, but his only crime was stealing my heart. He looked at me like I could be his forever, but I knew better. Family was the number one priority for the Lockharts, and Bayden wasn’t any different. As part of the Lockhart Brothers’ Construction Company, he was used to building from the ground up. Too bad my life was constructed on a shaky foundation. I wanted him and needed him, but I was no good for him. I had a secret that tore me apart, and if I let him in, it might destroy him as well.

Could I find the courage to tell Bayden the truth? And more importantly, if I did, would it bring us together or tear us apart?

Find out in Fearless Hart, the second book in the long-awaited Cross Creek Series.

Nothing got past the old folks in this town. They might have been deaf, but they heard everything; blind but somehow could see a trespasser from a mile away.

I don’t want him digging into my past for dirt because my life is a damn landfill.

With a glance around, he leaned in and spoke in a lower voice. “I might not seem like it, but I’m not terrible with women.” “Don’t let him lie to you,” Gypsy said from a few tables away. “He’s terrible. Clueless, really. He hasn’t even asked me out yet.” She continued to eat her garlic knots, her brows high and incredulous. “I’ll get to it when I’m ready!” He turned away from her and hunched his shoulders. “See? Can’t even keep ‘em away.”

“The quiet ones are always trouble.” Gypsy laughed. “They’re tougher nuts to crack, but well worth it.” “I think you’re the only nut here,” Roy said over his shoulder, “and you’ve already cracked!”

My Review:

This installment was quite busy and had a bit of everything; tragedy, a fledgling romance, a newly minted family, decades of toxic family drama, piles of angst, and welcome hits of humor and Ms. Collins’s unique brand of snark. The storylines were easy to follow and alternated between causing me to smirk and squeezing my heart. I adored Bayden, he was the perfect, highly supportive, and extremely patient BBF.   He was so perfect he could only exist in a book. I am enjoying this new series and already curious to see what will be coming next with brother number three.

Kelly Collins welcomes you to Cross Creek where hate is a four-letter word but so is love. One has the power to destroy, the other to heal.

Kandra brought me to my knees when she fled Cross Creek to follow dreams that didn’t include me. I picked up the pieces of my broken world and built a new life—one free of heartache. I thought she was in the past and would stay there, but I thought wrong. Kandra is back, and if I’m not careful, she’ll gut me again. As much as she stole my heart, she left behind the longing. What happens if I let her in again and she …

I escaped small-town life, searching for more, and thought I found it. I lived the life I dreamed of, a big city, a great job, a doting boyfriend. It’s funny how quickly dreams turned into nightmares. My ex-boyfriend fooled me into believing I could have everything, but he left me with nothing. I never imagined I’d wind up back in Cross Creek, scared, alone, and pregnant. Seeing Noah makes me wonder how I could have ever left him. He’s everything I didn’t know I needed. I love my child, and I love Noah. Is it too late to have it all?

Find out in Broken Hart, the first book in the long-awaited Cross Creek Series.

Favorite Quotes:

“The kid wouldn’t be into her.” Ethel snapped back like she’d been slapped. Norman continued. “Trust me, she’s not his type. She’s got a job and a brain.”

The guy dressed like a college professor on a budget, with his garish sports jackets and button-down shirts in hues of lavender and sky blue. His brown leather shoes only added to the dull old man look, though the guy was a couple of years younger than me. His outfits never ceased to hurt my eyes.

Secrets are heavy, and they come with a price that’s hard to pay alone.

I went quiet as Dottie approached because the woman couldn’t keep quiet to save her life, and part of me was terrified that I’d give away my big secret somehow. If she found out now, the whole town would know yesterday. Dottie gossip wasn’t constrained to time and space rules.

I was back in Cross Creek with less than I left with. It was a great lesson in the old adage that the grass was greener on the other side. In my case, the grass was greener because it was artificial turf.

My Review:

I am thrilled to see a new additional spin-off series from Kelly Collins while my fingers are crossed she continues with her prodigious Aspen Creek that sparked its beginnings. I loved this sweet second chance romance couple.   They were endearing and deserving and I liked them instantly. The storylines developed and flowed quickly and smoothly while introducing us to the new town and quirksome small-town characters, a process I always find highly entertaining as Ms. Collins has a knack for drawing sharp and amusing visuals with her clever words.

The Silent Victims

by Alex Coombs

Amazon  / B&NGP

 The Silent Victims
DCI Hanlon faces the toughest decision of her career as a string of political murders lead to a deadly confrontation.

A controversial, right-wing German politician is due to speak at the Oxford Union. Following a series of murders linked to a violent anarchist group, the city is on high alert. DCI Hanlon has been partnered with DI Huss to ensure the speech goes smoothly and that there will be no more killing.

Meanwhile, as Hanlon traces the person behind the murders, she soon realizes that the chilling truth has a terrible price. Is Hanlon willing to meet the cost?

The final gripping case for DCI Hanlon. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Lisa Regan, and Mark Dawson.

This book was previously published as An Incidental Death by Alex Howard.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

As their eyes rested on him he felt a scrotum-tightening chill of fear descend over his body. No, not a job interview, more the professional evaluation of a couple of undertakers interested to see if he would fit the coffin.

It was huge, and massively muscled. It emanated a sinister, vast strength. It looked like a dog that pumped iron and ate steroids.

Hanlon glared at Morris Jones, her glance taking in his immaculately polished shoes, the razor-sharp creases in his suit. It suddenly occurred to her that when Jones dressed he was probably dressing for death, either his own or someone else’s.

Let’s see how fit you are, she thought grimly to herself… in trainers she could run a marathon in a respectable three hours… Grey Man looked like he’d have trouble on an escalator. She grinned wolfishly as she increased the pace of her stride.

My Review:

While well written and full of complex twists and oddly compelling characters, I struggled with this one as it had a slow start and complicated plot lines that aren’t my cup of Darjeeling.   Extremist right-wing politicians are contemptible and I feel I’ve suffered more than enough of that vile nonsense from the previous occupant for the last four years, and toss in Islamic terrorist cells, well… the little pea in my brain was growing antsy and wanting to burn rubber.

But my biggest concern was where was my beloved Hanlon? She was scarce in this tale for quite a while, and I missed my favorite kickass chick. I covertly aspire to her level of indifference and would gladly become her faithful disciple, although that is definitely a situation the rogue lone wolf Hanlon would not appreciate nor enjoy.

If I were unaware of what this crafty author was capable of I most likely would have conceded with a DNF early on. I fear I have been spoiled and most likely ruined by the richness and absorbing quality of his previous offerings and this one just hadn’t grabbed me by the throat in the same manner as the three previous installments. But luckily, the agile and wily nature of Mr. Coombs’s stellar writing kept me invested and once my revered idol joined in with significant contributions, all was right once again. Silly me, I was just too impatient. The clever Mr. Coombs continues to remain all snug and warm in a cozy spot on my favorites list.

Two women, a world apart.

A secret waiting to be discovered…

VE Day 1945: As victory bells ring out across the country, war bride Ellie Burgess’ happiness is overshadowed by grief. Her charismatic Newfoundlander husband Thomas is still missing in action.

September 11th, 2001: Sophie Parry is on a plane to New York on the most tragic day in the city’s history. While the world watches the news in horror, Sophie’s flight is rerouted to a tiny town in Newfoundland and she is forced to seek refuge with her estranged aunt Ellie.

Determined to discover what it was that forced her family apart all those years ago, newfound secrets may change her life forever…

This is a timeless story of love, sacrifice, and resilience perfect for fans of Lucinda Riley, Lorna Cook, and Gill Paul.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

The crossing had been awful, the waves a seascape of mountains and valleys, the ship like a cork bouncing and tipping its way across the Atlantic.

She imagines him in twenty years’ time, jowls dropping from his square jawline, his eyes drooping and watery. By then he’d look like a vulture. Turning into his spirit creature.

You look fine. You could wear my grandfather’s pyjamas and you’d look amazing. If I wore my grandfather’s pyjamas I’d look like my grandfather.

Those chaps could find a diamond in a glass mountain.

My Review:

This captivating tale was quite the saga, I couldn’t seem to put it down and despite its impressive length of 450 pages, I absorbed most of it in a day and savored every well-chosen word.   The storylines were skillfully nuanced, devastating, cunningly contrived, and brilliantly paced; my curiosity was well and truly tipped from beginning to end. The characters were cleverly constructed, curiously compelling, and realistically flawed. Poor Ellie, she was forever to be screwed over by her sister, as dramatic Dottie was a piece of work.

I realized I was woefully unenlightened of Newfoundland other than a vague awareness of where it resided on a map. I adored the frequent use of their Creole and argot with such colorful and imaginative phrasings, although their gut-foundered menus of scrunchions and cod and brewis, as well as their frigid weather, sounds simply ruinous. And while I was quite taken by their belief and understanding of fairies, personally, I much prefer Tinkerbell.

I was provided with a review copy of this absorbing tale by TLC Book Tours and HarperCollins.

Book Review: Hadley and Grace by Suzanne Redfearn @SuzanneRedfearn

Hadley & Grace
by Suzanne Redfearn

Amazon  / B&N

Paperback: 347 Pages

Publisher: Lake Union Publishing (February 1, 2021)

Needing to escape her abusive marriage, Hadley flees with her two kids, knowing it might be her only chance. A woman who can’t even kill a spider, Hadley soon finds herself pushed to the limits as she fights to protect her family.

Grace, new mother of baby Miles, desperately wants to put her rough past behind her for good, but she finds it impossible when her path crosses with Hadley’s, and her quest for a new start quickly spirals out of control and turns into a terrifying flight for survival.

Stronger together than apart, the two find their fates inextricably entwined, and as the danger closes in, each must decide how much she is willing to risk for the other.

A powerful story of self-discovery, Hadley & Grace is the heart-racing tale of two women facing insurmountable odds, racing to stay one step ahead of the trouble that is chasing them, and discovering new kinds of love and family along the way.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Handing him over to Vanessa feels a little like handing a live grenade to a known sufferer of seizures.

“You don’t need to gloat about it,” Grace says. “I’m not gloating.” “You are. You’re gloating all over the place. You’re completely covered in gloat.”

The media storm around this is going to blow up. He can already see a Lifetime Original Movie being made. Hell, the motel clerk, that scrawny kid at the desk who went white as the walls around him when Mark showed his badge, probably has six marriage proposals by now and a dozen benefactors willing to give him a new smile. Every damn person in the article is going to be a celebrity and a hero, while the FBI is being painted as the Big Bad Wolf hunting Little Red Riding Hood and taking money from little old ladies and young men who need dental work.

She looks like a Greek goddess—empowered, bold, and fearless— like she should be chiseled of marble and holding up a temple.

… rumors have been floating around about a movie being made. Grace cringes at the idea, certain someone like Angelina Jolie will be cast to play Hadley, while some actress who looks like Nanny McPhee will play her.

My Review:

I was riveted and on edge while reading this cunningly crafted book and was holding my breath that the two protagonists would survive, and it didn’t look likely. The storylines were intriguing, tragic, highly emotive, and perfectly pitched to maintain an undercurrent of tension while also balancing out the emotions with more lighthearted and amusing observations and memories of two women who by happenstance and a series of poor choices became bonded and accidental fugitives on a cross-country run from the FBI with their children in tow.

The pacing and storytelling were nothing short of brilliant and evoked a steady stream of heart clenches and keen visuals. I ached for the woman working as hard as she could to keep her head above water and wearing worn-out shoes with superglued soles while contending with a screaming inconsolable baby. Suzanne Redfearn has mad skills and a rabid new fangirl.

Favorite Quotes:

There can only be one thing that can beat a buff man in uniform, and that’s one who’s taken half of it off. Oh my giddy aunt, as Mum would say. Or just cor! Okay, call me shallow, sexist and guilty of stereotyping. I don’t care. I’m allowed. He looked like he was in the SAS, but with a better haircut.

I kidded myself that Teddy and I could make a go of it, even though he was a reptilian control freak who should be cast in a weird episode of Dr Who where he will be zapped and get his just rewards.

I think my lady parts have become turbocharged. That hasn’t happened before either. They’ve been pulsating like strobe lights at a rave and I feel totally drained. In a very nice way.

My Review:

This was a fun and enjoyable read, but then Zara Stoneley is a sure bet for entertaining, wryly amusing, and highly engaging tales which she generally casts with realistically flawed and quirky characters. The storylines were crisply written in the first-person POV of Becky, an original and authentic character who was well-intentioned and had a good heart but she was also a bungler, a screw-up, inattentive, impulsive, and easily distracted.   She didn’t think things through and made irresponsible errors in judgment but thankfully, she was also endearingly kind and creatively gifted. While I wanted to smack her a few times as she was more than a bit heedless and exasperating, she was also totally knowable, and I adored her.

About the Author

Zara Stoneley is the USA Today bestselling author of The Wedding Date.

Born in a small village in the UK, she wanted to be a female James Herriot, a spy, or an author when she grew up. After many (many) years and many different jobs, her dream of writing a bestseller came true.

She writes about friendship, dreams, love, and happy ever afters, and hopes that her tales make you laugh a lot, cry a little, and occasionally say ‘ahhh’.

Zara now lives in a Cheshire village with her family, a lively cockapoo called Harry, and a very bossy (and slightly evil) cat called Saffron.

Zara’s bestselling novels include ‘The First Date’, ‘Bridesmaids‘, ‘No One Cancels Christmas‘, ‘The Wedding Date‘, ‘The Holiday Swap‘, ‘Summer with the Country Village Vet‘, ‘Blackberry Picking at Jasmine Cottage‘ and the popular Tippermere series – ‘Stable Mates‘, ‘Country Affairs‘ and ‘Country Rivals‘.

A guy should never, and I do mean never, hook up with his friend’s sister.

It doesn’t matter how hot she is or how many times he’s imagined her in a not-so-innocent way. Nope. Those visuals should always remain hidden deep down in a dark place.

But of course, I just had to drink until I couldn’t see straight and screw everything up. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and I swear it wasn’t my fault. It was that damn tequila.

I never expected to wake up naked only a few feet away from the woman I never should have touched. But man, reality had been so much better than any fantasy I’d ever had.

But it all went downhill fast when she opened the door to leave and came face to face with none other than her brother, who is also one of my best friends.

I’m a dead man, but Jade might actually be worth it.

And to think, all it took to change everything was…
Just One Night.

Look… my boobs sparkle when I move.

Please… we waited until it sounded like you two were finished with your mattress sports and waited patiently for the acknowledgment that you’d been sparkled.

My Review:

This is the last installment in an incredibly fun, irreverently amusing, and insightfully written series of New Age romances occurring in a college fraternity house. I am sorry to see it end but Ms. Harms tied all the stories up nice and sweet with HEAs all around. I giggle-snorted my way through each volume with ingenious pranking, steamy and endearing love stories, and clever shenanigans occurred in each book.   She almost had me wishing I could go back in time and doing college again if it could be this fun, but on second thought – no.

Finding Love at Mermaid Terrace
by Kate Forster

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP

Love comes when you least expect it…

Tressa Buckland likes her quiet life in Port Lowdy, with its cobbled streets and colorful terraced houses overlooking the sea. Her job at the local paper allows her to pursue her art in her free time, with no one but her tabby cat Ginger Pickles to mind her in Mermaid Terrace. But then the owner of the paper is called away on an emergency, and it’s up to Tressa to run the paper for six months. Her first task: find a new part-time journalist.

Dan Byrne is the angriest man in Ireland or so the readers of his very successful column, ‘Dan takes on the world’, think. But after a story goes south and he loses his job in Dublin, Dan has no choice but to start afresh. When an opportunity comes up in sleepy Cornwall, Dan and his Golden Retriever Ritchie set off for a new adventure.

For Tressa, Dan’s arrival to Port Lowdy changes everything. Tressa tries not to look too deeply at her own life, but Dan sees a story to uncover in absolutely everyone even her. The two of them couldn’t be more different… yet, if they can find a way to work together, they may just breathe new life and joy into this sleepy seaside village.

Finding Love at Mermaid Terrace is a heartwarming new village romance about the power of love and kindness, from the bestselling author of Starting Over at Acorn Cottage.

Favorite Quotes:

She had a voice like sandpaper and an accent that could have shucked an oyster but her eyes were kind and she smiled at him like she meant it.

He’s very handsome… Even a nun would have a little squirm if she was sitting opposite that man.

‘I could sue you.’ ‘Get in line,’ he said. ‘But be warned all I have is my shitty Subaru and Ritchie, and both of them have dodgy exhausts, quite smelly with the wrong fuel.’

She wants to be home and she’s moping around here like an egg with no yolk.

I missed the smell of the sea… Mum’s house smells like potpourri and disappointment in me.

My Review:

This was a fun and cleverly amusing and enticing read packed with oddly compelling, complex, and endearingly quirky characters. I was fully consumed from start to finish and reveled in the deft author’s agile and wry levity, insightful observations, and thoughtful and perceptive narrative. Ms. Forster’s writing hit all the feels and was slyly emotive and absorbing. My attention and interest never lagged, as the various storylines were equally engaging whether humorous, angsty, or heart squeezing. She has mad skills.

My Review:

I enjoyed every perfectly pitched word of this highly engaging and delightful book. It was definitely giggle-snort worthy. Ms. Low’s storylines and writing style were good fun and sparkled with wry wit, clever levity, and situations that resonated deeply with me. The characters were endearingly quirky, highly invested, tirelessly supportive, and interesting women whom I covet to have as my own circle of friends.   My favorite of all was of course Auntie Val. I suspect Ms. Low was following me around and taking notes, although I am not quite as well accessorized. I aspire to ascend to Val’s lofty heights of Auntiedom and colorful fashion sense. I adore Shari Low and am scheming to read all of her past and future scribblings as I am enamored with her deliciously amusing and pleasantly absorbing wordcraft.

Excerpt

Chapter Five

Stephanie opened the closet by the front door and pulled the rolled decorative flag out of the corner. As she opened the front door, she gave the pole a little shake to unfurl the flag, then stepped onto the porch and slid the pole into place. A light breeze caught the fabric, causing the print of the giant cookie to ripple slightly.

In addition to the six dozen cookies she’d baked for Carson to take with him, she’d made four dozen more for the family. A few years ago, Mackenzie had started the tradition of putting out a flag whenever she baked cookies. Avery and Carson had gone running to grab a few and bring them home. Now that Zeus, Galaxy and Eternity were big enough to roam the compound, they watched for the cookie flag, as well.

Stephanie went back inside and carried two disposable containers up to her son’s room.

Carson’s large suitcase was ready to go. His carry-on backpack stood open on the desk. Her son was stretched out on his bed, his gaze locked on his tablet.

“I made you cookies for the trip,” she said. “And the first few days of camp.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

When he didn’t raise his gaze, she sighed heavily. “Look at me, Carson.”

He did as she requested. She waved the two containers. “These are your cookies. The ones in the red container are peanut butter. You’re fourteen, Carson, so I’m trusting you to be responsible with them.”

The corners of his lips trembled as if he were trying not to smile. “With cookies, Mom? I think I’m up to the challenge.”

“Peanut butter cookies. Just the thought of you carrying them with you makes me break out in a sweat. Remember that some kids are allergic. It’s a real thing. Do not go passing them around without talking to everyone first. Peanut butter cookies can trigger nut allergies.”

His dark eyes crinkled as he grinned. “Didn’t you put walnuts into the chocolate chip cookies?”

“What? Crap. What was I thinking?”

He dropped his tablet onto the bed, stood and wrapped his arms around her. “Mom, don’t sweat it. No one I know is allergic to nuts.”

“What about at camp? Forget it. You’re not taking these with you. No kid is dying on my watch—not because I made cookies.”

He took the containers from her hands and dropped them into his backpack. “We’ll be fine. I’ll make sure everyone I bunk with is okay with nuts. There’s four of us in a suite, Mom. The cookies won’t last the night.”

She knew he could be trusted to be responsible. “Okay, just be careful. Maybe I’ll text your counselor.”

He winced. “Don’t set me up to be that freaky little kid who can’t be away from his mommy.”

“That’s so judgmental.”

“You know I’m telling the truth.” He zipped up his backpack, then slung it over his shoulder and grabbed his suitcase. “It’ll be fine. Have a little faith.”

“I should go with you to the airport,” she said.

“Mom, stop. I’m driving to Seattle with Grandma and Giorgio. Dad’s meeting me there and getting me to my gate. I’m fourteen years old. I’ll be fine.”

She wanted to protest that he was still her baby, only she knew he wouldn’t appreciate that. So instead of telling him he had to stay little forever, she followed him downstairs and found Rhys sitting on a stool by the island. Four and her three kids were there, as well, all eating cookies. Because in this family everyone came by to say goodbye. Mackenzie had stopped by that morning, as had Jaguar, and Avery had seen her brother before she’d gone off to work.

“Excited?” Rhys asked his nephew.

Carson grinned. “Can’t wait.”

They hugged. Four was next, whispering something in his ear. Carson chuckled but didn’t respond. He hugged and kissed his cousins before heading out front. Stephanie went with him.

Right on time her mom and Giorgio pulled in front of her house. Giorgio popped the trunk of the late-model Mercedes and helped Carson with his luggage. Stephanie hugged her youngest.

“Text me the second you get to California,” she said. “From the airport and then again when you arrive at camp. If you don’t text me, I’ll call your counselor and pretend that I’m crying and then you will be the freaky little kid who can’t be away from his mommy.”

Carson sighed. “Mom, you don’t have to do that. I’ll text you, I swear.”

“Threaten to fly down and stay with him,” her mother offered from the passenger seat in the car. “Remember when I had to do that with you?”

Stephanie did her best not to shudder at the memory. She’d been a bit chatty in high school and was constantly in trouble for talking to her friends. When the usual punishments—detention and being grounded—hadn’t worked, her mother had told her that whatever was happening at school must be so very interesting, what with Stephanie unable to stop talking about it. So Barbara would come with her to every class, unless she could learn to be quiet.

Stephanie hadn’t spoken for nearly four days.

“Text me or I’ll come stay with you,” she told her son. “Look into my eyes and see how much I mean that.”

“You’re scary sometimes,” he told her as he kissed her cheek. “Love you, Mom.”

“Love you, too.”
