In Case You Didn’t Know
(The Fitzgeralds #2)
by Carrie Elks

Amazon / B&N / BB

I write steamy romance novels for a living. In secret. And only the two people closest to me in the world know the truth…

Until I bump into my best friend’s grumpy, gorgeous, tech‑billionaire older brother at an exclusive forbidden club.

Yes, I was only there for research. No, he doesn’t believe me.

And now Asher Fitzgerald’s looking at me like I’m not just his sister’s friend, but his next obsession.

When a leak in my apartment and a crisis in his company force us to spend time together in his small town, sparks turn into a blazing, no‑strings entanglement.

One that’s forbidden, secret, and completely addictive.

If my best friend finds out I’m sleeping with her brother, she’ll probably kill me. And if Asher finds out he’s the inspiration for my dangerously possessive book hero… he might just get there first.

The more nights we spend tangled together, the harder it is to imagine walking away.

But secrets have a way of coming out.

And when they do, loving him might be the best chapter of my life… but it could also be the one that breaks me.

If you love grumpy billionaires, best friend’s older brother tension, laugh-out-loud found family, and small town secrets that make every kiss dangerous, this standalone romance is for you…

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

“I’ve had three knee replacements,” Mylene says with a sniff. West mouths three? and glances down like he’s checking for spare limbs.

Honestly, a shirtless Asher could bring about world peace. We’d all be too busy ogling to argue.

…she mutters under her breath, “if he’s not home in the next five minutes I’m going to cut his balls off and tell his associates they’re a new delicacy.”

That’s so stupidly Fitzgerald. You idiots always do this. You clam up the moment things get hard, like your vocal chords have unionized.

She looks at me as the engine growls to life. “Let’s go educate our men on what happens when you try to outmaneuver women with a vat full of coffee and a grudge.” We peel out of the lot. Fueled by caffeine, fury, and just enough heartbreak to make it dangerous.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt this content. Maybe I never have, I don’t know. All I do know is that being with this woman feels like coming home and being on vacation at the same time.

My Review:

I am loving this series. Ms. Elks never disappoints, as her books are well-honed and smoothly written, with my favorite dual point of view, and laced together with giggle-snort-worthy and cleverly amusing wit. And as a bonus, there are Kindle-melting sensual scenes that had me gasping and grabbing for libation to stave off dehydration. I adore these characters and am eaten up with curiosity to learn the cause of the forty-year feud between the senior citizen twin sisters.

“Your friends are vicious.” “Yes, they are— as you say— vicious, but they are fountains of information, innuendos, and observations.” “You mean they are gossips.” “Precisely,” answered Lady Elsmere,

Honey, she is more plugged in than MI-5 or the FBI. Of course, she knows something, but she won’t spill. The old biddy will tell me when she thinks the time is right.

“And how do you suggest we temper this behavior with a child that’s not even two yet, Miss Know-It-All?” I didn’t reply, since I had a daughter who frequently engaged in violence and loved guns. Maybe my parenting skills weren’t spectacular after all.

You even lie about your lies.

Remembering made me angry, and as the afternoon wore on, the memory turned into a blister.

My Review:

This was a quick, satisfying, and engaging read that kept me entertained and curious from start to finish. What more can one ask for? Ms. Keam manages to perceptively hit the feels as well as amuse in a smooth and wryly humorous manner. Her characters are realistically flawed and struggling, yet endearing and deserving of being known. I hope this series continues into perpetuity, as that is how long I plan to keep reading Josiah’s adventures.

Lady Eleanor Swift has a special royal invitation. She’s got just the right dress and the perfect plus one… But wait! Is that a body by the throne?

Lady Eleanor Swift is at Buckingham Palace to see her new husband, Detective Chief Inspector Seldon, knighted. Brimming with pride, all she can hope is that Gladstone the bulldog behaves himself in front of the king.

Donning a disguise as a journalist for a well-to-do magazine, Eleanor, with butler Clifford posing as her photographer, interviews the high-profile guests and residents at the palace. She wasn’t expecting gossiping wives, affairs aplenty and talk of long-lost treasure! Was Dilly killed to settle an old score or was he perhaps a little too close to someone else’s wife?

But when another soldier is murdered at midnight, hours after the palace gates are locked, Eleanor knows she needs to keep her wits about her… And when everyone seems to have a reason to lie, can Eleanor dig up the truth before it’s her head next?

Verity Bright never fails to conjure the most amusing and cleverest of cozy mysteries that manage to keep the little pea in my brain relentlessly spinning. A brain like Clifford’s, the most unflappable, wryly humorous, and overprepared butler of all time, is required to unpack and solve these conundrums. But I do love trying.

They might be over the hill but they’re far from six feet under and now there’s a murder to solve!<

Meet Martin Maxwell. As a former government operative, at eighty-four years young, he always pictured a retirement sipping shaken-not-stirred martinis on a far-flung island. But in need of some care after a new hip, he finds himself at Twilight Lodge on the decidedly cloudy English coast.

From the outside, it’s a picture-perfect place to recuperate. But when popular resident Elsie dies unexpectedly, Martin suspects foul play. She’s the third death in less than two weeks, and she always had a clean bill of health. Armed with a walking stick and his trusty notebook and pen, Martin decides to investigate.

While nobody believes him – death is an inevitable part of care home life after all – Martin is convinced something sinister is afoot. With his wheelchair-bound sidekick and former nemesis, Albie, in tow, they begin questioning the residents. Soon, they learn that there are several suspects in the frame.

When they discover Albie’s love interest, Barbara, is in the killer’s sights, Martin knows time is running out. Will Albie’s heart be broken forever, or can they battle the effects of old age and each other, outwitting a murderer before it’s too late?

An absolutely hilarious and heartwarming cozy mystery perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood, Jesse Q. Sutanto, and Only Murders in the Building.

My Review:

This was good fun, I enjoyed this highly amusing tale from start to finish. How lucky am I? I unsuspectingly stumbled upon a well-paced murder mystery with a refreshingly original premise, a cast of quirky yet endearing and relatable characters, and adroitly laced together with clever, wry humor. Derek Balfe proposed to Milly O’Shea at twenty.

She turned him down and left to build a career and a future that didn’t include him. Derek had no idea that it wasn’t purely Milly’s decision to decline but rather the influence of a meddling relative.

Now thirty-eight, Derek is a successful hotelier, divorced, and parenting two teenagers. His father is retiring soon and has asked Derek to take over the family business. He has a lot going on, and to add to it, Milly has moved back into town, more distractingly beautiful, shy and delicate than ever–and with a teenage daughter of her own in tow. Milly is close friends with Derek’s sister, so he can’t avoid running into her–but he is determined to ice her out.

That is, until their daughters meet at school and become inseparable. Derek has to deal with seeing Milly every week, sometimes daily. The more he’s around her, the more he realises that deep down she’s still the same girl he fell for all those years ago, and he begins to suspect that there was more to her rejecting his proposal than he’d always believed.

This tasty tale was laced together with considerable angst, which ordinarily is not my jam, but I didn’t seem to mind as the characters were so well inhabited and endearing that I was willing to hang in there with them. Murder in the Winter Woods
(Julia Bird Mysteries #8)
by Katie Gayle

Amazon  / B&N  / BB

Julia Bird adores a walk on a winter’s day. The crunch of fresh snow under your feet and the promise of hot cocoa by a roaring fire afterwards… But she’s not expecting to find a body in the woods!

It’s Christmas in Berrywick, the busiest time of year for dashing taxi driver Lewis. But when he’s killed in a road accident, the entire village is shaken. Julia Bird, recently appointed to the Road Safety Committee, visits the site so that no other villager suffers the same fate. But when she spies a pendant left in the bushes, she feels certain Lewis’s death was no accident…

As the festive lights twinkle in the village square, Julia vows to uncover the truth. She soon learns not everyone found Lewis’s charm appealing. Sweetshop owner Dora says he had an eye for the ladies, much to his wife’s frustration. Lewis recently gave his life savings to a mysterious businessman who proves difficult to track down. But could these be reasons enough to want him dead?

Then, local beekeeper Matthew is struck by a car near the Christmas market. Julia believes the two deaths must be linked, but contrary to Lewis, Matthew was as sweet as the honey he sold. Who could possibly want to hurt Berrywick’s kindest man?

With no obvious leads, Julia stumbles upon an old picture that finally links Lewis and Matthew. Many years ago, they were in a band poised for stardom, but when the bubble burst, their chance at fame vanished quicker than a glass of festive eggnog. Could someone be targeting the band members one by one? And can Julia track them down before the killer strikes again?

An utterly gripping and totally charming cozy mystery set in the English countryside. Fans of M.C. Beaton, Faith Martin, and Betty Rowlands will love the Julia Bird Mysteries!

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Her appearance matched her personality to a pleasing degree. She had a creamy complexion, and her face had a soft plumpness, as if she were made of clouds and sugar and cherubs.

Although, now that she thought about it, it was odd that it was thought unseemly to speak ill of the dead, who were beyond caring what was said about them, but quite acceptable to talk badly about people who were actually living and breathing and capable of being hurt.

… compared to the tragic ends of Lewis and Matthew. I hope I go that way, she thought. A nice quick heart attack or stroke in my own bed. The thought wasn’t morbid or frightening. In fact, it was rather soothing. Julia had seen enough of life to be pragmatic about death.

My Review:

I always enjoy my time with Julia Bird; she is a clever and snoopy retiree who has a sharp eye for detail, even if her memory is becoming a bit cagey. As always with these clever scribes, their writing was engaging, easy to fall into, well-paced, and wryly amusing. Katie Gayle’s entertaining tales tickle my curiosity and scroll smoothly through my gray matter. While I would never have guessed the outcome, the colorful Aunt Edna knew all along. Aunt Edna tends to hold the vital clues; if you know how to listen, she parcels her tips out in a seemingly nonsensical yet profound Edna code.

Favorite Quotes:

We look like two lust-drunk lovers caught riding the bony express in the shower, which couldn’t be further from the truth.

People assume we’re dunking the dingus every chance we get. We should probably be licking each other’s tonsils or something.

“That was some record-breaking, grade-A, world-class sex. The stuff of legends, honestly. Olympic-caliber.”… “I assume they’ll be filming when they come to present us with the gold medals.”

“It’s not every day the world record gets broken for mattress dancing.”“You think they’ll hold a parade?”“They’ll throw penis confetti like we had at Zoe’s bachelorette party.”

The word love pings something inside me. It’s an odd mix of terror and joy that leaves me a little bit queasy.

Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt and discovered it itches and has a hole in the armpit.

There were lots of terrible ones, like The Pet Rescue Gang (aged eight), which definitely should not see the light of day ever again. Murder in the Choir
(Sarah Vane Mysteries #4)
by Alice Castle

The Christmas lights twinkle in the town square as merry carolers bring good tidings. But when a festive feud turns fatal, Sarah Vane is on the case!

While snowflakes fall outside, Sarah Vane cosies up in her cottage with a book when a leaflet for the Christmas choir flutters through her letterbox. Keen to sign up, she pays a visit to choir master Daffyd Jones. But her festive cheer crumbles like a mince pie when she finds him dead in his office. With just a week to go until Christmas, Sarah has a festive case to solve.

As Sarah talks to the devastated choir members, she soon discovers many had a reason to dislike Daffyd. Was it the soprano who was humiliated by him in front of the choir for missing her high note? His long-suffering wife suspected an affair – are her floods of tears fake? And why was his picture-perfect forever home put on the market just days before his death?

But with her tinsel in a tangle, another body is found, this time on the beach. The police think the poor lad had one too many at a Christmas party and fell off the pier, but when Sarah looks closely, she sees a clear link to Daffyd. Can Sarah catch the culprit among the carollers, or will she be dashing through the snow to her demise this Christmas?

A delightfully cozy, utterly compulsive, and gripping murder mystery, perfect for fans of Faith Martin, J.R. Ellis, and Clare Chase who are looking for their next addictive read.
