‘Well you know, the old Mrs Miles meeting the new Mrs Miles.’ Rebecca stared at the phone. He made it sound like a relay race where she would hand over the baton to her successor.

She was just starting to relax in his company when he produced several travel brochures featuring exotic and very expensive locations and said that it was Rebecca’s turn to pay for their next date and why didn’t they make it a fortnight in St Lucia.

Old girl? Had her ex just called her old girl? Still standing on the doorstep was a tiny creature, only an inch or so shorter than Rebecca but with an incredibly petite frame, a narrow waist that made Rebecca instinctively pull in her stomach and tiny sparrow hands that fluttered in the air, showing off an immaculate manicure and a large diamond ring.

Rebecca remembered reading somewhere that in Nature it was always the males who had the extravagant display of plumage and they would sway and wriggle and show off everything they had to the chosen female. The whole room seemed to be waiting for Charles to fluff up his feathers and perform the mating dance thought Rebecca wildly.

My Review:

I’ve gotten a big kick out of this series and book two was as cunningly humorous and sharply written as the first. I smirked and chuckled my through this delightfully comical and lushly appointed story. Julie Butterfield has a keen sense of humor yet she cleverly hovers her story on a well-honed edge between levity and tension with uncommon agility and enviable craft. This wily author tapped all the feels from gleeful joy to crushing heartbreak with insightful observations, rueful inner musings, and pained second-guessing being par for the course. The engaging storylines were enjoyably amusing and highly entertaining while the writing was lushly detailed and briskly paced.

Two years after their divorce Rebecca’s over-bearing ex-husband alerts her to his upcoming marriage, to an obvious gold-digger, although it is Rebecca’s gold that Annabelle is aiming to mine. Her obnoxious ex-husband has managed to attract a fiancé who more than rivaled his insufferable and demanding nature. Rebecca was again having difficulty locating her spine, although, to her credit, a few vertebrae did make an occasional appearance.   However, it appeared nearly impossible to stop the steamroller of expectations and expenses that the manipulative Annabelle shrewdly kept in motion.

About the Author

Julie Butterfield belongs to the rather large group of ‘always wanted to write’ authors who finally found the time to sit down and put pen to paper – or rather fingers to keyboard and wrote Did I Mention I Won the Lottery? It should be pointed out this is a complete work of fiction and she did not, in fact, receive millions in her bank account and forget to mention it her husband – even though he still asks her every day if she has anything to tell him!

Her second book was Google Your Husband Back and the latest addition is Did I Mention I Was Getting Married? – which revisits Rebecca a few years after the lottery win which changed her life.

Did I Mention I Won the Lottery?

Rebecca Miles has won the lottery and is now living a millionaire lifestyle. The only problem is – she hasn’t told her husband. So at weekends, she’s a dutiful wife in Darlington, working at the local deli and making shepherd’s pie for dinner, but during the week she’s living in her new mansion in Leeds spending her days shopping whilst her husband thinks she’s looking after her sick mother. Will she get the courage to tell him before he finds out for himself? And can several million pounds in your bank account save a failing marriage?

.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Before leaving the house she held the lottery ticket in her hand. It had lived in her pocket throughout the previous week and had gone everywhere with her. But now that she knew it was worth so much, she was frightened at the thought of taking it out of the house. Suppose she lost it? Suppose she put it in her purse and then she had her purse stolen? If she put it back in her pocket it might fall out.

She put the phone down and wiped the sweat from her forehead. If it was going to take this much out of her spending a few hundred pounds, how on earth would she cope with spending 15.7 million?

15.7 million pounds. Like a little mantra inside her head the number seemed to fit in with her footsteps as she walked towards the nearest shopping area. 15.7 million. Oh my God, she had won 15.7 million and it would soon be in her bank. Where should she start?

Her credit card, her trusty companion, had started to shout with glee when it was taken from her purse but even so, she had spent very little.

The only thing she didn’t do was tell Daniel. Each evening he came home and told her how hard his life was, how hard he had to work. And Rebecca did what she had been doing for years, nodding in the right places, serving his meal and waiting for him to shut up so blessed peace would reign in the house.

She took very little with her. She had of course shopped like a professional over the last weeks and the wardrobe of clothes she left behind in Leeds each Saturday morning reflected the amount of money in her bank account. In Darlington she was a different person. The downtrodden wife of a grumpy, belligerent man. It was getting harder and harder to play the role when she returned.

My Review:

This was a fun and cleverly penned tale; written with a sharp wit, crafty insights, heart-squeezes, edge of my seat anxious encounters, and wily plot twists. I was reluctant to put my Kindle down and enjoyed this shrewdly paced and well-crafted tale that hit all the feels. I chuckled, gasped, and huffed my way through this curiously enticing and cannily appealing story.

Rebecca had won a huge jackpot and didn’t tell anyone, least of all her arrogant and pompous husband. She couldn’t come to terms with the win herself for over a week.   Gradually she slowly began to enjoy and amass longed for items such as a lovely home in the town she had previously lived in and greatly missed – but it still wasn’t time to tell her obnoxious husband just yet; new clothes and toiletries – which she easily hid from her husband as he didn’t pay much attention to her anyway; a better quality of wine – which was cagily pushed to the back of the fridge; a new car that her husband wouldn’t approve of, so of course she couldn’t tell him about that.   No, it was never the right time to tell her husband of her good fortune as he was vile, controlling, overbearing, and hideous, he would certainly take over and where was the fun in that?

A large part of the problem was that Rebecca was spineless and had allowed her husband to browbeat and treat her in such an abominable fashion while their marriage steadily deteriorated over the last five years; I was quite frustrated with her lack of backbone and tendencies for indecision, avoidance, and waffling. I alternated between wanting to give her a good kick in her can and anxiously holding my breath that she was going to cave and give in to her overriding sense of guilt. She avoided detection for two months – eight weeks of heady bliss – by stealthily living a double life. Then it really hit the fan.

Book Review, Giveaway: Revenge on the Rye by Alice Castle

Revenge on the Rye

by Alice Castle

Amazon US UK / AU / CA

Beth Haldane, SE21’s answer to Miss Marple, thinks she is going for a carefree stroll on Peckham Rye with her best friend, Katie, and her annoying new puppy, Teddy. But before Beth knows it, she is embroiled in her most perplexing mystery yet.

Strange events from her family’s past, present-day skulduggery in the art world, and the pressures of moving school in south London threaten to overwhelm Beth. Will she be able to piece together the puzzle before her son’s crucial interview at Wyatt’s? Or will Beth’s insatiable curiosity finally drag down all her dreams for the future?

Join Beth, her irascible on-off boyfriend, Detective Inspector Harry York of the Metropolitan Police, and the dog walkers of Peckham Rye in a tale of murder, mayhem – and bloody revenge.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

So, you’re telling me there’s a bit of a #MeToo movement building up in the park against young Teddy here? … Perhaps you might want to think about getting him, erm, done? I’m not sure what age they need to be to have the op, but that would definitely sort out his hormones, I should think. Even a Dachshund isn’t going to look that irresistible if you’ve had your danglers cut off, I dare say.

‘Liquorice? Oh, is that your dog?’ looking under the bench at the little wiry-haired creature… ‘He’s very cute,’ said Beth dutifully, looking at Liquorice doubtfully. She supposed it was like being presented with other people’s babies. No matter how much they resembled Winston Churchill sucking a lemon, you were still obliged to say how utterly gorgeous they were.

Beth sometimes wondered how she’d grown to adulthood with such a light hand on the parental tiller. Her father had always been at work. She remembered trying to get into the garage, as a small child, as that was the place her father disappeared to every morning and the spot he emerged from every night. With her child’s logic, she assumed he spent his days shut away in there, and already she could see why he might want to.

Delving in the bread bin, she made the unwelcome discovery that she only had white sliced, which she was pretty sure Katie equated with crack cocaine. More horrifying still, one slice had a tiny fleck of blue on one edge. Mould! Hastily chopping off all the crusts and hurling them in the bin dealt with that problem. And penicillin was good for you, right?

… such an oily charmer, he’s totally the type to sell a double bed to the Pope. I’d take every word he said with a mine of salt.

Bursar looked as though he had been poured into his suit but had forgotten to say ‘when’.

My Review:

While she appeared to have started with an exceptional skill set and an enviable level of innate ability, Alice Castle continues to hone her craft as each new installment of this pleasantly entertaining and enticing series has proven to be even better than the last. Each cunningly plotted tale has provided ample servings of clever wry humor, engaging storylines, endearingly flawed and intriguing characters, and an unusual and unpredictable murder mystery. I am besotted with this quirky collection of characters; several of which reappear in each interconnected book. I am also totally enamored with this series and keenly await each new tale.

The main character of Beth is a pint-sized, pixie boot wearing young widow and single-mom with an insatiable curiosity, a somewhat short attention span, and a tenacious tendency to follow her own instincts. I adore her! She is as prone to daydreaming and being easily side-tracked as she is to stumbling into crime scenes and discovering murder victims. Her domestic skills and time sense are humorously haphazard yet she somehow keeps her beloved young son and well-adored pets fed and content, and is fortunate enough that her work output is largely unmonitored and her frequent absences go unnoticed. Beth generally intends to show up at her office, yet she just cannot seem to keep herself from careening off-track to snoop and delve into the lives of those unfortunate creatures she has found without a pulse. All despite the rigorous admonitions from her overworked and jaded police detective paramour to cease and desist.

In addition to providing high-quality entertainment, Ms. Castle has gifted me with a toy box full of new terms and idioms and for my Brit Word List with: in bits – to be very upset; titchy – a small person; chuntering – talk or grumble monotonously; swish – fashionable; inside gen – information; and Bonio – a popular brand of dog biscuit. What would I ever do without my blessed Mr. Google?

A new wife and a vengeful ghost. Not a good mix.

Letitia – Tish – Stanyer makes husband Theo promise never to remarry if she dies and he complies just to pacify her. She isn’t going to die.

She does – and he does remarry. Tish isn’t happy. Her spirit cannot rest with another woman in her domain, sampling the delights of her husband. Theo belongs to her – Sheena will have to go.

Sheena might have other attributes than being a domestic goddess.

My Review:

Whisper To Me was a quick, easy, and engaging read that kept me a bit on edge with both curiosity and anticipation of the next spectral manifestation and/or act of retribution.   I enjoyed the premise and creative storylines as well as the cleverly unique characters who enticed and beckoned my interest. Theo had promised his first wife Tish, that he would not remarry if she were to die before him, although after several years as a widower, he lost his big head and was primarily using his little head when Sheena, a less than hygienic yet wildly carnal woman with a large sexual appetite, showed him some attention.   Sheena quickly got a ring on her finger and she and little yappy dog with indiscriminate toileting habits were soon ensconced in Theo’s home, soiling and defiling every surface and invoking a demented rage from Tish’s lingering entity. Odd things began to happen, but being that she was not the brightest bulb in the pack, it took a while for Sheena to notice.

Additional storylines involved other characters although those involving the vile and odiferous Sheena were my favorites. The story wrapped up but didn’t fully conclude and left room for continuation, which I sincerely hope will be the case.   I gleaned a new addition to my Brit word list with midden, which from Northern UK and Scottish usage would be a trash heap.

About the Author

I am a divorced mum of two adult sons and nana to three grandchildren, soon to be four. I’ve always had a notion to write but didn’t get round to it seriously until I became ill with M.E in 1995 when I was 40 and was too ill to continue my job as a learning support assistant in a mainstream high school. I was devastated to have to resign from my job but writing saved my sanity. My first attempt was a memoir, Shadow Across the Sun which covered the loss of my mum to breast cancer two days before my 13th birthday. When the rejections began to flow in from traditional publishers and agencies I joined a creative writing class and learned to write fiction. Whisper to Me is my 10th novel. I have a strong belief in the afterlife due to events following my mum’s death so most of my stories have some form of supernatural aspect to them.

Blurb

If you’re planning on falling in love…

When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.

You’d better be sure…

Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.

Someone is there to catch you.

Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.

Favorite Quotes:

Sadie listened with half her brain, the other half wandering off.

Sometimes life really bit a girl on the ass. Thankfully she had enough padding there to take the hit.

“So she can be bribed.” “You just fed her a fortune in fancy cuts of meats and cheeses,” she said. “Anyone could’ve been bribed with that. Hell, I’d have jumped into a stranger-danger van for that.”

“She dumped me. Twice. Women should come with instructions.” “What would be the point of that?” Sadie asked. “I’ve never actually seen a man read any instructions.”

He sighed. “It’s hard to meet the good ones.” “That’s because they don’t usually frequent the dives you frequent. Go to Target. The female to male ratio is ten to one and they’re already looking for things they don’t need.”

Rocco offered his fork with a grape on it. She shook her head. “I don’t consume wine in pill form.”

She’d long ago taught herself how to take a mental step back from her family and treat them like . . . well, entertainment. She was no longer part of the circus but just an audience member.

My Review:

Every time I have finished a Jill Shalvis book I remind myself of the objective to clear my calendar and read the rest of her listings, which would take a chunk of time, as she has been quite the busy bee; Goodreads lists thirty books to her credit. I was late to this party but I have every intention be that nightmare type guest that never leaves. I am greedy and want them all, past, current, and future works. I am totally enamored. I adore her clever wit and humorous banter as much as her insightful observations and emotive reflections. Her writing is so stunningly agile she can have giggle-snorting and sniffling on the same page. Playing For Keeps was a heart-clenching tale yet well-balanced with levity, swoon-worthy romance, and sumptuous sensuality. I delight her wordplay and worship her altar of used printer cartridges.

Second Chance At The Ranch

by Maxine Morrey

Amazon US / UK / CA / AU / B&N

It’s never too late for a second chance at love in this uplifting and warm-hearted romance.

It’s never too late to find love…

When Juliet Scott falls for ruggedly handsome Pete while away traveling, she never imagines how different her life will be to that of her sister, successful and beautiful model Hero. Based on a cattle station in the vast Australian Outback, Juliet’s life is now simple, down-to-earth and honest, and the perfect antidote to the chaotic celebrity lifestyle that Hero leads in the UK.

With her striking brunette hair, perfect posture, and mesmerizing green eyes, it is no wonder Hero has come so far in such a superficial industry. But when tragedy strikes, Hero finds herself in the arms of her sister, recuperating from a terrible accident on the other side of the world.

With her modeling career in tatters, and her scars more than just skin deep, Juliet worries that Hero will hide behind the mask she wears forever. But does Australia have something, or someone, to offer that London never could?

She practically took out my eye with that cleavage. She’s most definitely more woman than I’ll ever be.

Shame you didn’t back over the pneumatic bimbo whilst you were at it.

My Review:

Angst is not my friend, I crave balance in my world – crazy I know – it is just my personal preference. While well written with an interesting premise, this book was so angsty it was painful. Yet I was hooked and just couldn’t seem to let it go despite my pique, I was intrigued by the story and had to know what happened, regardless of having to wade through a tale that was 90% conflict and tension to get to that coveted HEA. Ms. Morrey certainly made me work for it, but it was worth it. The quick glimpses of humor and romance were brief respites, refreshing and well appreciated.

The characters were an interesting and endearing mix of Brits and Aussies. I frequently lost patience with the main character of Hero, who was the vortex of all the angst. Hero was an international supermodel who had a kind heart, yet she was an ice queen, deeply damaged, self-involved, terminally stubborn, and extremely anxious and uptight with a penchant for running away and shutting down when uncomfortable issues arose; a childish and tedious trait.   Hero’s sister married an Aussie with a sheep ranch in the Outback, hence the dual-continent tale. Of course, I enjoyed the Aussie side of the story considerably more, due to the handsome men residing there as well as the sizzle and dust they kicked up.

This time my new vocabulary lesson includes a mix of Brit and Aussie words, with Brumby – the wild horses of Australia; Pommie – a derogatory term for a Brit in Aussie speak; and Antipodean accent – what Brits call Aussie and New Zealand accents.

Author Bio

Maxine has wanted to be a writer for as long as she can remember and wrote her first (very short) book for school when she was ten.

As time went by, she continued to write, but ‘normal’ work often got in the way. She has written articles on a variety of subjects, as well as a local history book on Brighton. However, novels are her first love.

In August 2015, she won Harper Collins/Carina UK’s ‘Write Christmas’ competition with her first romantic comedy, ‘Winter’s Fairytale’.

Maxine lives on the south coast of England, and when not wrangling with words loves to read, sew and listen to podcasts. Being a fan of tea and cake, she can (should!) also be found doing something vaguely physical at the gym.

My Review:

I continue to have a love/hate issue with short stories, they can be just the thing or leave me annoyed and unfulfilled. This grouping had a bit of both as some were significantly better than others, although all in all, it was a quick and saucy little diversion. A few smirks and tasty treats to amuse your naughty side.

About the Author

Lilly Avalon is the thirty-something author of the RESIST series and other romance books. She started to pen her first erotica at twelve years old, but her mom found the “dirty story” and threw it away, which was just as well because it wasn’t that good. At all. Luckily, she continued to write stories for years until she rediscovered her love of sexy tales in her late twenties.

Lilly currently resides in Ohio with her husband and pet rodents. Lilly Avalon is a pen name.

Lucy Baker is not your usual 25-year-old. She is more at home reading and knitting in her cluttered little flat than going out partying and socializing.

Gifting Lucy the locket that helped Brenda find her own true love, she hopes to push her reticent neighbor in the right direction. But is Lucy Baker ready for the opportunities and heartbreaks of the real world? It’s about time she put her knitting needles aside and found out…

The Hopes and Dreams of Lucy Baker will be the most charming, heart-warming and feel-good novel you will read this year, perfect for fans of Ruth Hogan and Gail Honeyman.

My Review:

This debut author’s work was a delight to read, I was quickly enamored with her dynamic characters and vivid storytelling.   I adored the friendship of the elderly yet feisty Brenda and her quiet yet kind neighbor Lucy. Brenda had purple streaks in her hair and was gifted with many talents. Young Lucy was a crafty knitter and an endearing and tenderhearted soul, yet timid and lacking in confidence. I enjoyed watching a stronger and more colorful Lucy evolve although Brenda’s deterioration squeezed my cold heart, put hot rocks in my throat, and caused my eyes to sting in a curious manner. The storylines were crisp, engaging, evocative, and laced with clever levity.   Jenni Keer is one to watch and taught me a new Brit idiom of “big up,” which Mr. Google taught me was to praise or speak well of.   I will gladly big up Jenni Keer anytime!

Author Bio

Jenni Keer is a history graduate who embarked on a career in contract flooring before settling in the middle of the Suffolk countryside with her antique furniture restorer husband. She has valiantly attempted to master the ancient art of housework but with four teenage boys in the house, it remains a mystery. Instead, she spends her time at the keyboard writing women’s fiction to combat the testosterone-fuelled atmosphere with her number one fan #Blindcat by her side. Much younger in her head than she is on paper, she adores any excuse for fancy-dress and is part of a disco formation dance team.

Book Review, Giveaway: The Convalescent Corpse by Nicola Slade

The Convalescent Corpse

by Nicola Slade

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA

A story of Family, Rationing and Inconvenient Corpses.

Life in 1918 has brought loss and grief and hardship to the three Fyttleton sisters. Helped only by their grandmother (a failed society belle and expert poacher) and hindered by a difficult suffragette mother, as well as an unruly chicken-stealing dog and a house full of paying-guests, they now have to deal with the worrying news that their late – and unlamented – father may not be dead after all.  And on top of that, there’s a body in the ha-ha.

‘I love it. A delightfully unusual mystery with wonderful characterisation and historical detail.’ – LESLEY COOKMAN BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE LIBBY SARJEANT MYSTERY SERIES

… my elder sister Alix announced that she intended to become a nun. This was because she had diligently attended every party she could cajole her way into in the town, but still failed to attract a man willing to become the husband she so desperately wanted. The nun idea was speedily cast aside and instead she decided to volunteer as a nursing assistant at the convalescent home for officers at Groom Hall, the gloomy hunting lodge next door to us. Her reasoning was that a wounded officer, being unable to escape her attentions, might well be a good marital prospect provided his injuries were neither unsightly nor injurious to the married state.

I imagine the best I can hope for is a wounded young man who’ll think me an angel of mercy. I don’t care if he has a limb or two missing, as long as he has a handsome bank balance and thinks I’m wonderful.

Alix says the prospect of Mrs Mortimer as a mother-in-law renders him ineligible as a husband.

My Review:

This was quite an unusual collection of characters, each one was oddly entertaining and rather abhorrent; I couldn’t get enough of their smartly written and artfully portrayed peculiarities. I also learned quite a bit as I will confess to being rather sketchy on my WWI knowledge, while I am old – I’m not that old. The storylines were humorously engaging while also informative and continually prodded my curiosity; was it murder, who did it, was it a crime or a kindness? There were multiple suspects, each equally repellent and captivatingly depicted. I treasured this wily author’s pacing, character development, and humorous observations; she cunningly tucked in shrewd insights and colorful descriptions with levity cleverly woven throughout, although their food sounded absolutely dreadful, which was a boon to my diet efforts!   I do believe Nicola Slade has snared a new fangirl.

Favorite Quotes:

Daylight is not my friend. Every freckle, frown line, wrinkle, and blemish stands out like a beacon on my face, screaming ‘well past expiration date.’

Didn’t think I’d live to see the day… The most committed bachelor of La Plata County, brought to his knees by a ballsy redhead.

“You remind me of my Ana, she was a redhead like you and could cook like a saint, fight like the devil, and love like a sinner.” His watery blue eyes sparkle. Ten minutes later, when I’m putting away the last of the dishes, I’m still smiling at his words. To love like that, still so strong even after death rips you apart, is tragically beautiful.

… he makes my soul sing.

Trial run with the new babysitter… A seventeen-year-old neighbor with purple hair, combat boots, and enough metal in her face to set off security detectors from fifty feet, but she came highly recommended. I just hope my new flat-screen TV will still be there when I get back.

My Review:

In just a handful of years, Freya Barker has the Romantic Suspense genre well mastered. Her tales are easy to follow yet captivating; cleverly detailed and populated with quirky and endearing characters; deftly constructed with engaging and entertaining storylines; and well-balanced with wry and acerbic levity, sensual sizzle, and tension building intrigue that keeps my curiosity primed. So it is easy to see why she has continuously resided near the top of my Favorite Authors List since I initially fell into her work by picking up Slim to None on a freebie day. Her lovely words are now an instant one-click purchase at any price.

Freya Barker inspires with her stories about ‘real’ people, perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy.

She is the author of the Cedar Tree and Portland, ME Series, the Northern Lights Collection and the Rock Point Series. She is also co-author of the SnapShot Series.
