Book Review, Giveaway: Covering Ollie by Freya Barker

Title: Covering Ollie (On Call #2)
Author: Freya Barker
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release Date: May 14, 2019
Hosted by: Buoni Amici Press, LLC.

Living in Durango, Colorado for the past eighteen years allowed Ollie Rizzo to build her own business and carve out a quiet existence for her and her teenage daughter. She’s used to going it alone. However, their new silver-haired neighbor might present a problem—not only is he handsome—he’s also Durango’s new chief of police; a complication she can’t afford.

For recently widowed Joe Benedetti, the job offer as Durango’s new chief of police came at the right time. With life, the new job, and his two young sons settling into a comfortable routine, he does his best to ignore the beautiful and intriguing woman across the street. Yet when he discovers she’s caught the attention of the FBI, there is no way he can stay away.

Their worlds collide with the appearance of FBI Special Agent Cruz Livingston. The agent has a warning to deliver, one that spins life in Durango out of control, giving Joe a crucial mission—keep Ollie alive.

Favorite Quotes:

Had I known law enforcement apparently comes with a prerequisite hot factor here in Durango, I might’ve gotten myself in trouble sooner. Holy Hannah, they have them in all shapes and colors here, but so far —without exception— all very handsome.

In my twenties I still had a firm body that could snap back into shape like that. At forty-three all the damn elastic is gone.

She’s been a burr up my butt since I knocked her off her damn throne last week. Spreading rumors that I’ve been sneaking into Mr. Costello’s room at night… He’s in 2D. Ninety-three years old and can barely lift his eyelids, let alone anything else. I swear that woman is killing my rep… That’s why I’m calling. I’m plotting revenge, but I can’t remember if it was the calla lily or the daffodil that can make you sick enough to shit your pants… Can’t take this lying down, Ollie. In just one week, any gains I’ve made in beating her ass at Bingo have gone down the toilet. Best payback to send her there as well.

…there’s no limit to the love we have to give. It’s not like shoes, where you can only wear one pair at a time.

 My Review:

I always enjoy Freya Barker’s hard-working heroes and romantic suspense tales full of sizzle, sass, and sexy and protective alpha lawmen.   Her characters tend to be admirable and inspirational survivors, endearingly tattered, and assisting others as best they can while also dealing with their own challenges and limitations.   Covering Ollie was classic Barker with generous slices of humor, sensuality, and intrigue while featuring single parents juggling jobs, parenting, work stress, and threats of a violent criminal element while navigating a new relationship minefield littered with snoopy family members and the unsolicited yet well-meaning opinions and advice of co-workers. The engaging storylines were easy to follow, held my attention, kept me guessing, and had several unexpected twists I never saw coming.

Freya Barker inspires with her stories about ‘real’ people, perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy.

She is the author of the Cedar Tree and Portland, ME Series, the Northern Lights Collection and the Rock Point Series. She is also co-author of the SnapShot Series.

We named him after Tony Stark.” “You’re kidding me?” “I never kid about the Avengers,” she says in all seriousness.

My mind races, trying to remember if I ever learned anything from watching MacGyver about how to help me out of this situation. Without a paper clip, it seems hopeless.

 My Review:

Joslyn had it all, a successful career, a bank full of money, lovely homes, a dangerous stalker, a bitter ex, and a deceitful stepmother. Yikes, I’ll stick to my quiet life of obscurity, thank you very much. The storylines alternated between suspense and sensual romance, with a side order of family drama for additional flavor.   The book was written from a dual POV of the two main characters of Kynan and Joslyn, who honestly, were not totally likable. Kynan may have been a sexy Brit with a swoony accent yet he was also a crass prick, and Joslyn was all too gullible. I did pick up a new word for my Brit Vocabulary List with a word I’ve noticed often but never actually knew exactly what it meant – duffer – which according to Kynan means a useless person. Silly me, all this time I thought it was a bad golfer.

Book Review: The Facilitator – Part 2 by Tracie Podger

The Facilitator, Part 2

by Tracie Podger

Amazon US / UK / CA / AU

The game was over – but who had won?

Mackenzie Miller thought his life was perfect. He had the woman of his dreams but there was one last piece of his life puzzle to fit. Could he do it in time?

Lauren Perry thought her life was perfect. She had the man of her dreams but when humiliation comes full circle is she brave enough to face it head on?

More importantly, what happens when your list of fantasies has been achieved?

A new list has to be explored, of course.

The Facilitator, part 2 follows on from The Facilitator – this erotic romance features graphic scenes of sex and very colorful language – you have been warned!

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

“I believe a gentleman should reciprocate,” he said. “I like the reciprocation, but I don’t need a gentleman,” I said.

He’ll have a bit of how’s ya father with her and then come to his senses. Sometimes, Lauren, these men, they need to have the sex, get it all out of their system before their brain can work properly.

I feel so sorry for you. The acid from the bitterness that consumes you must need a shitload of medication.

My Review:

This salacious tale was quite a sizzler. This libidinous pair didn’t merely scorch the sheets, their lustful activities and repeated frictions appeared quite capable of setting the bed aflame! I adored Mackenzie and Lauren and enjoyed the continuation of their mutually thoughtful and solicitous love affair. I was also intrigued by the suspenseful storylines and delighted with the sweetly loving and deeply supportive and soul-deep connection the couple shared, although there were several cringe-worthy sensual scenes that took me quite a bit outside my comfort zone.

I would love to know what type of vitamins, magical elixirs, or health regime this licentious couple would have followed, as their stamina was otherworldly. I would certainly buy stock in whatever product could induce such vigor and endurance. I didn’t know whether to be impressed, jealous or horrified when one encounter became so intense Lauren passed out from the bliss. However, the most satisfyingly erotic scene for me was the tender care Mackenzie took in dressing Lauren for a special evening out with clothing that he had personally procured for her. Sigh. He was very attentive and considerate of her.

I picked up some new Brit lingo with how’s ya father – which apparently is a euphemism for sex in the UK.   But I was rather aghast in the results of Googling pie and mash – which was defined as leftover scraps of meat and vegetables baked in a pastry crust and served with mash potatoes drenched in a green parsley sauce, and commonly accompanied with jellied eels and the liquor sauce made from the liquid used to boil the eels. Hmm, I’m not sure I’m adventurous enough for green and eely potatoes on the regular.

(Sometimes in Love #1)

by Melonie Johnson

The first in a new series, a journalist focused on her career and a sexy Scottish comedian turn a one night stand into forever.

Cassie Crow leaves for vacation with two goals: fill up her empty charm bracelet and have a one night stand. For once, she wants to have fun instead of obsessively checking her work email. And kissing a man in a castle who’s dressed as a Scottish Highlander is the perfect solution.

Except when that man turns out to be Logan Reid, the host of a popular sketch show—and Cassie has just been roped into his latest prank. She wants nothing to do with his antics, but that was a really great kiss, and one night together couldn’t hurt.

It’s clear that one night isn’t enough and when Logan’s show brings him closer to Cassie, they decide to give dating a try. Can the woman who’s focused solely on her career and the man who refuses to take life seriously make it work?

.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Three Weeks ago, Cassie Crow left Chicago armed with a naked charm bracelet and a full box of condoms… No longer bare, her bracelet was loaded with tiny keepsakes she’d found in shops all over Europe. The condom box, however, was still full.

Bonnie was a library whore. The mere glimpse of an old book got her more worked up than a boy-band fangirl with a front-row seat and a backstage pass.

Contrary to her fantasy version of Scotland, hunky, shirtless guys in kilts weren’t sprinkled liberally across the country.

“Shakespeare, Cass. He’s quoting Shakespeare!” Good thing her best friend had an on-the-brink -of-setting-a-date fiancé back home, otherwise Cassie was pretty sure Bonnie would have climbed Logan like a tree and made him her personal Scottish jungle gym.

My Review:

I knew I was in for a treat when the first sentence already had me smirking. I believe I read most of the book while sporting a delighted smile. This lively tale was brimming with irreverent humor, sassy banter, and clever wit. Each character was endearingly and distinctly drawn with unique traits and odd little quirks that kept me curious and eager to learn more about them. I was knocked out of my favorite pair of red crocs when noticing this well-crafted story was the author’s debut publication. Her writing style was fresh, crisp, and unfailingly engaging with steamy and heart squeezing storylines as well as highly humorous ones.   And it was brilliant casting to feature a devilishly sexy and mischievous ginger who spoke with a Scottish burr and owns his own kilt… Logan was irresistible.

I hit the mother load in Scottish Words to add to my British Isle’s Word List with fearty cat – chickenhearted; clatty – slovenly; bampot – Scottish slang for idiot; fashed – bothered or annoyed; fouter – of no value; winching – kissing with tongue; clootie dumplings – a dessert; guffy – someone whose behavior is annoying or getting on your nerves; shavie – a joke or prank; bridies – meat pastry; Hogmanay – Scottish New Year’s Eve; and first-footing – the Scottish custom of going house to house visiting friends for food and drink on New Year’s Eve. Clatty and fearty cat are my current favorites.

by Chelle Bliss & Eden Butler

My job as a SEAL was to go in and save the day.
But even heroes fall. Even heroes make mistakes.

My only saving grace was Gin Sullivan.
My knock out best friend who wasn’t afraid to tell me the truth even when it hurt. She’d pick me up when I was wallowing in my own stupidity.

It wasn’t hard for me to fall for her.
Any man would.
She was beautiful.
She was smart.
She was everything I’d ever wanted.

I had plans to tell her that, squash the pinning we’d both done for two years.
But a bullet to the gut silenced me and Gin got tired of waiting.

Now I have a new mission, one that I can’t fail:
Do whatever it takes to make Gin mine forever.

Words always get in the way. They did. Somehow, it was the words we didn’t say that injured the most. It was the silence that kept us from what we want.

 My Review:

I struggled to finish this one, not that the book was bad, it just wasn’t aligned with or palatable to my personal taste as constant conflict just isn’t my jam. The angsty storylines were missing the critical element of wit and levity that I had come to expect from these talented authors and instead appeared to be a repetitive cycle of 90% conflict, reticence, and forfeiture. I also failed to connect with the painfully stubborn and annoying morose characters, I found them exasperating. However, for readers who have a proclivity for angsty and quarrelsome tales with a few sizzling scenes of hot steamy sex, this would be a quick and tasty treat.

Daddy-the-Great looks like he might be at his wit’s end. Grams said she is always at her wit’s end, and I don’t think we need to be driving Daddy there, too. It seems like a dangerous place to be. We might need an intervention.

I looked at Ian’s infant who was wearing nothing but a towel duct taped around his waist… “If you can get her into her bed for a nap without waking her up, I’ll give you a thousand dollars. Strike that, I’ll give you my car.”

Pulling me closer, she hiked up on her toes and murmured quietly in my ear so only I could hear, “Now don’t go and do something stupid like hurt my daughter. I’ll hunt you down and cut off your balls. Know it took some big ones for you to show up here today, so use ’em wisely.”

That’s a really bad word, Mr. Mack. Don’t tell me you really are a troublemaker, too. Mom’s already got her hands full with the two of us.

My Review:

A.L. Jackson seems to revel in anchoring her compelling yet broken and deeply flawed characters in misery, angst, melodrama, distress, and indecision while keeping her storylines fraught with tension. Thank goodness she always plants a few adorable children without filters on their mouths within her addictive stories to provide comic relief.   Like the previous two books in this series, Pieces of Us was an intriguing, tragic, and heart squeezing second chance romance with elements of suspense and a ton of heartbreaking family drama. My poor coronary muscle feels battered and bruised and is in dire need of wine therapy and lighter fare. I’m thinking a vat of Moscato and a nice relaxing romantic comedy is in order for my next read.

After the death of her father, sculptor Riley Black leaves Butte, Montana for Aspen Cove in search of the family she’s never known. There, she will bend steel to her artistic vision… and maybe, just maybe find a place to belong. Luke Mosier isn’t just dead sexy. He’s dead serious about keeping the people of Aspen Cove safe. He’s convinced Riley Black is an accident waiting to happen. Even so, under her welder’s mask, Riley is the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. His iron jaw softens when he realizes she’s more than she first appears to be… Not only can she melt metal, but she melts his heart.

As their attraction heats into a red hot passion and their world goes up in flames, Luke has to choose between love and duty. Will their bond hold together under the strain… or shatter into a thousand pieces?

Favorite Quotes:

“We have many single men in town, and they have deep pockets for a girl with a nice smile.” She looked down to where the buttons of her dress were opened to reveal a large amount of cleavage. “Don’t forget to show your personality… Remember to smile. You may want to murder someone on the inside, but you get more tips with sugar than salt.” Riley was sure the saying was something like you get more flies with honey than vinegar, but it never made much sense because why would someone want flies?

“Honey, you know I fell in love with you when you used your pickup line.” She tapped her chin. “What was it… oh yeah: baby, if you were a fruit, you’d be a fineapple.”

“It all starts with a kiss.” “Says the confirmed bachelor buying a family home on a street called Pansy.” He sat back and frowned. “It gets me more bang for the buck.” “With your crazy standards, you’ll never see any bang in that house.”

“I don’t like to talk poorly of the dead,” Maisey said. Riley squinted her eyes and tilted her head. “She’s not dead.” “She is to me.”

“That damn love bug hit him like a hammer to the head.” Riley giggled. “I hear it’s contagious.” Thomas held up his hand, giving her a five finger stop sign. “I’m inoculated.” “Someday, someone will worm their way into your heart.” He cuffed her chin. “I’m not an apple.”

 My Review:

Another lively and wittily amusing small-town romance by the lovely Kelly Collins, AKA, The Queen of Hearts. I adore her wry and uniquely engaging writing style and One Hundred Ways finds her in fine form with reams of keenly honed quips, witty banter, and lots of quirky and interesting little details that tickled my brain and conjured sharp visuals, such as a man drowning during a vodka-fueled session of dishwashing. I enjoyed getting to know this sweet couple and am already looking forward to becoming better acquainted with one of their friends in the next installment.

“How do you feel about pink?” Penelope asks our bride. “The same way you feel about spring break with all three of your kids at home.” Presley chuckles, taking a sip of her champagne. Our resident mother warrior shudders. “Don’t even joke about that. It’s like surviving a nuclear fallout. There is cereal and poop and Legos everywhere.”

He couldn’t locate that thing with a flashlight and a search and rescue team at his disposal… I don’t understand what’s so difficult about it. We have a button, right at the top, full of nerves. It literally sticks out just for them to find. Some men, I swear!

Books never stopped calling, they didn’t act like a jerk, and they certainly were there in all times of need. Yeah, I’d rather spend time with my favorite characters than people any day of the week.

I didn’t even really care about politics. It was all a bunch of stuffy old men in suits arguing about where money should go.

She’s gotta be whip-smart. And she looks like she could either hand me my balls or take real good care of them.

  My Review:

I had greatly enjoyed the vivacious feel and levity to Fleeting, the first book in this series, but my enthusiasm did not hold up with this sequel. However, it could well be my issue as unfortunately, the author decided to utilize several of my least favorite tropes, which had me sighing and rolling my eyes; why do authors recycle these tiresome angsty themes, why?

Nor were the main characters all that appealing to me, Lily was essentially missing a backbone and sold herself out with a smile for her corrupt political family, I am rather amazed the poor girl could walk and sit up straight being without a spine and all. Bowen had been surly for a decade while being blackmailed with a supposed dark secret – a secret that seemed hardly worth the effort and inadequate for the purpose. But worse than that, his behavior toward Lily was vile and deplorable; I would have given him free neutering service had he talked to me that way.

My respite from complete and total exasperation was provided by the continuing storylines and amusing banter with and between the secondary characters. I enjoyed the story once the secret was outed and the heavy curtain of angst was lifted. I’m hoping book three brings back the joy with a more authentic and entertaining premise.

The list of reasons why he deserves to come close to dying is so long, I can’t even see the end of it with binoculars, but …when I’m not hating Jake, I kinda like him.

Jake Matthews just knocked on the window to my soul and whispered, “I see you.” Not the million imperfections I see in the mirror.

Sometimes no words are the best words.

I’m going to Hell. But that’s not a newsflash.

 My Review:

Jewel E. Ann is a wily trickster.   I was gleefully tripping through what I thought was a delightfully steamy, cleverly written, and wryly insightful romantic comedy that had me smirking and snorting with mirth, and then boom, she broke my heart. And just like that, I was stunned. Then I was thunderstruck with an epiphany. I realized this cagey author had deftly layered poignant details into her narrative with ninja-like stealth, all the while her artfully penned storylines had been ironically amusing while my heart was being squeezed with all the feels. All of them.

Jewel E. Ann has cunningly crafted a tale around the main character of Avery, who was comically entertaining but not at all admirable or initially likable.   Had I been trapped on a cross-country road trip with the shallow, vain, self-possessed, and quirkily high-maintenance diva Avery, I would most likely have smacked her a few times before reaching our destination, all right, probably more than a few… Yet this talented wordsmith had me feeling torn up over her distress – the only explanation I can come up with is word voodoo…   And lucky for us, Jewel E. Ann obviously has a strong dose of it. I have added her entire backlist to my TBR as I covet all her clever words.

About Jewel:

Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.

With 10 years of flossing lectures under her belt, she took early retirement from her dental hygiene career to stay home with her three awesome boys and manage the family business.

After her best friend of nearly 30 years suggested a few books from the Contemporary Romance genre, Jewel was hooked. Devouring two and three books a week but still craving more, she decided to practice sustainable reading, AKA writing.

When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.

Book Review, Giveaway: Pink Bits by JB Heller

PINK BITS

by JB Heller

Did you know the medical term for a butt crack is intergluteal cleft?

My name is Reagan, and spouting random facts like this one at inopportune moments is my affliction. I’m chronically awkward, socially inept and completely lack a filter. Believe it or not, men do not find these attractive traits.

When my sexy-as-sin neighbor barges into my apartment at the arse crack of dawn, everything changes. For some strange reason, my brand of crazy doesn’t send him running for the hills. Instead, he settles in for a nap on my couch…

Oh, and did I mention he was completely naked?

Unless your biological mother has changed her mind about removing my testicles with her bare hands. Then she’d be welcome to join us as well.

I’m SOOO sorry but I have to cancel tonight. I’m surfin’ the crimson wave and Mother Nature is being an extra cruel bitch this month. I feel like a slasher film is being enacted inside my uterus.

Bleed out? That’s a little dramatic. You’re going to need stitches, not a funeral director.

My Review:

Reading this delightful book was pure fun, smirks and giggle-snorts abounded, and there may even have been a bit of a situation of spewed Diet Dew during an unfortunately inconvenient second when my throat couldn’t contain a giggle and swallow at the same time.   I didn’t even mind as I was so besotted with this cleverly written tale and deliciously quirky couple. Reagan was totally filterless and a drama llama who claimed to suffer from “a debilitating case of awkwardness.” She was brimming with a mountain of peculiar quirks and a tendency to blurt out oddly comedic and hysterically inappropriate trivia and random facts. I coveted their stamina as much as her amusingly witty collection of coffee mugs. Colorful characters and nimble levity flowed through each page and my only regret was that the story had to end. I would greatly enjoy knowing these enticing characters and spending time with them every day; they were naughty good fun.
