It Takes a Villa (It Takes a Villa #1) by Kilby Blades

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP / BB

For the reasonable price of $1, Natalie Malone just bought herself an abandoned villa on the Amalfi Coast. With a detailed spreadsheet and an ancient key, she’s arrived in Italy ready to renovate–and only six months to do it. Which seemed reasonable until architect Pietro Indelicato began critically watching her every move… .

Favorite Quotes:

Betrayal was never accidental. It was always a choice.

Pietro’s charm was universal— not something meant specifically for, or uniquely affecting, her. Natalie had seen toddlers swoon in his presence.

That’s why I came to Italy. To live in a beautiful little town with quirky but lovable people, great weather, and delicious food. Jorge gave me a rundown on the merits of naked beekeeping last week. Between him and Signora Carlota, I’m exceeding my goal.

She had once thought kissing straightforward— formulaic— then she experienced what Pietro could do with his tongue. Natalie was torn between wanting to be jealous of all the practice that had left him with skills like that and wanting to write personal thank-you notes to every woman who had contributed to his technique.

She didn’t think she’d ever felt so many different emotions at once. Pietro appealed to her sense of freedom, to her sense of humor, and even to her sense of logic. He knew how to get at her from anywhere.

My Review:

This was an entertaining and relatable read with generous sprinkles of humor, a slowly developing new romance, gasp-worthy sensuality, observant insights, family drama, DIY renovations, gorgeous Italian sightseeing, and an interesting mystery. The writing had a smooth and easy-to-follow flow with taunting tidbits that teased my curiosity and kept me reading when the clock argued otherwise. The angst and contrived conflict levels were low, which is exactly how I like it. This was my second time reading her work and I find I enjoy Ms. Blade’s engaging writing style and liberal injections of humorous descriptions and amusing observations, which are some of the excellent reasons why she has been added to my list of favorites.

The Gin Sisters’ Promise
by Faith Hogan

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP / BB

Three estranged sisters. Six months to come back together.

When Georgie, Iris, and Nola’s mother died and their father disappeared into his grief, the sisters made a pact: they would always be there for one another, no matter what.

Now, decades later, they haven’t spoken for years and can barely stand to be in the same room. As his health declines, their father comes up with a plan to bring them back to one another. In his will, he states that before they can claim their inheritance, they must spend six months living together in their childhood home in the village of Ballycove, Ireland, and try to repair their broken relationships.

As the months progress, old resentments boil over, new secrets threaten to come out and each sister must decide what matters more: their pride, or their family. Can they overcome their past and find a way to love each other once more?

Bestselling Irish writer Faith Hogan’s The Gin Sisters’ Promise is an emotional, uplifting story about forgiveness, second chances, and the importance of family, for fans of Sheila O’Flanagan, Heidi Swain, and Liz Fenwick.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

The cry that emitted from Nola came as gasping gulps, as if she was going under, smothering in the cold waters of despair. She was far too small for her feet to touch the bottom of her grief, far too young to navigate these treacherous waters.

Georgie had two left feet and a voice to put the crows out of business.

She almost felt as if she was somehow outside herself, looking in at a snapshot of time that wasn’t quite real. She was out of kilter with everything around her, so she almost felt as if she might lose her balance just standing still.

Catherine smiled at Myles and although she looked like a harmless old pensioner, Iris could almost hear the soundtrack to Jaws gearing up from the far corner of the room.

My Review:

Faith Hogan is one of my all-time favorite authors, her thoughtful and emotive writing resonates with me despite the differences in our cultures and the oceans between us. I always look forward to reading her work. Her characters tend to be complicated, deeply flawed, and unfailingly real while also endearing in their authentic and original storylines and insights. I adore her observant and brilliantly paced storytelling and know I’m going to be in for a heart-squeezing and keenly perceptive tale when I pick up my Kindle to dive in.

The disaffected sisters were an annoying bunch of testy siblings full of long-festering resentments with each putting up a front while hiding their secrets, failures, and personal miseries from the group. I wanted to give each one a pop to the back of the head and a pinch or two, while at the same time I was invested in their story and hoping for better futures for all three.

In addition to an evocative, satisfying, and involving read, I also picked up a new addition to my Irish word list with boxty, which is a potato pancake and sounds delish.

by Verity Bright

Amazon  / B&N / BB

A grand villa, croissants for breakfast, and a dead body in the wine cellar… Lady Swift can’t seem to take a vacation from murder!

Summer 1923. Lady Eleanor Swift is finally persuaded by her butler, Clifford, to take a villa in the south of France for the season. She plans to do what a glamorous lady abroad should: long lunches on the balcony followed by lazy afternoons lounging by the pool. Even Gladstone the bulldog is looking forward to a daily paddle in the ocean.

But when Clifford examines the wine cellar, he discovers there are no decent reds but there is a very dead body. The victim is famous American movie star, Rex Armstrong. Poor Rex seems to have been stabbed with a sword from the film set. So how did he end up in Eleanor’s villa?

Before Eleanor even has time to change out of her traveling suit, her beloved butler is arrested for the crime. At sea without her right-hand man, Eleanor must gather her wits if she’s to outsmart a murderer and save Clifford.

Attending a glitzy party at the luxurious Hotel Azure with the film’s cast and crew so she can question her main suspects, Eleanor overhears the director having a most unsettling telephone call that throws all her theories out of the water. Can Eleanor unmask the true killer before her time abroad is cut murderously short?

A gripping historical murder mystery full of charm and intrigue, set in the beautiful French Riviera. Fans of Agatha Christie, T E Kinsey, and Lee Strauss will adore The French for Murder.

My Review:

The talented writing duo that comprises Verity Bright never disappoints as their tales are unfailingly crisp, creative, and comedic, and capture my interest with unpredictable plot twists and conundrums. They have unlimited tricks up their sleeves as well as a smooth and pleasant writing style that keeps a grin on my face while tickling my curiosity with an unabiding need to solve their mysteries as well as learn more about the oddly compelling characters themselves. I certainly didn’t see this one coming and had reached all the wrong conclusions. I am avidly looking forward to their next caper.

I had to stop the train my thoughts were on right the hell now or I would be going places I couldn’t handle, especially at this moment. I had this tendency to do what, according to Dr. Google— the only doctor I could afford for myself, most of the time— was called indulging in apocalyptic thinking. Once I got started, I could be thinking about a glass half empty and end up picturing the glass exploding, sending shards flying everywhere and blinding a pack of nuns.

Lois and Max shared a look, like they were communicating telepathically as I’ve often thought female best friends could do through some kind of sorcery…

My Review:

This was a fun and lively second chance romance/small-town/southern read that covered a lot of ground with common and uncommon issues, disabilities, and foibles that make navigating our world a bit trickier for some. Their challenges were well-integrated and smoothly featured with thoughtful insights as well as clever and amusing humor within comfortable and easy-to-follow storylines. The characters were easily accessible, endearing, admirable, and the type of well-intentioned and hard-working people I’d like to know and have in my life. The writing style and story threads scrolled smoothly through my gray matter and were well-paced, engaging, and entertaining. I am enjoying this series as well as this author’s work and am eager to pick up the next offering.

The One Month Boyfriend
(Wildwood Society #1)
by Roxie Noir

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP / BB

The One Month Boyfriend, an all-new fake-relationship rom-com full of heat and laughs from bestselling author Roxie Noir, is available now!

It’s a simple enough agreement: for one month, Silas Flynn is my boyfriend of convenience.

He needs his old-fashioned boss to think he’s ready to settle down.

I need some arm candy to prove to my jerk ex-fiancé that I’ve moved on.

Perfect, right? Except for one minor detail: we can’t stand each other.

Everybody thinks he’s this perfect guy, but I know the real Silas. He’s a cocky, obnoxious jerk who thinks he can charm his way out of trouble and get anything he wants.

But there’s one tiny problem with fake dating: it looks a lot like real dating. Worse, it feels a lot like real dating.

I know once this is over, we’ll go our separate ways. No matter the smoldering looks he gives me, the possessive way he touches me, or the dirty things he whispers in my ear, Silas isn’t falling for me.

That’s fine. No matter how good being with him feels, I’m not falling for him, either.

One month. That’s it.

Favorite Quotes:

God, I love air conditioning. The pinnacle of human achievement.

‘…if you want me to break into his car and put shrimp paste under the floor mats, I will.” Now that’s the kind of friendship I need. “In August, no less,” I say. “Can you imagine?” “I don’t want to.” “My cousin’s friend’s roommate said someone did it to her once when she left her car somewhere for a whole weekend, and it smelled so bad she called the cops because she thought there had to be a dead body in there,” she says, comfortingly. “Wow,” I say, my chin digging into her shoulder. “One of the cops puked. She had to sell the car for scrap.

My face goes hot. My lips go cold. My body is somehow every temperature at once, I can’t feel my fingertips, and I think I might pass out from the sheer, all-consuming blinding rage. It feels like someone hooked my brain stem to a car battery, it’s so forceful, so palpable that I swear if I move at all I’ll send shockwaves through the room.

I’ve had one drink and I feel like I’m made of night air and fireworks.

Sentences feel like tetris when I’m like this: all pieces that could easily fit together if only I had enough skill and speed to make it work, which I never do.

My Review:

This is a fun and humorous read despite being filled with a cast of complicated and fractured characters with a multitude of issues they struggle with on a daily basis. Some were obvious and some were masked. This clever scribbler obviously knows a thing or two about anxiety and the ridiculousness of the scenarios the sufferer can conjure to endlessly fret over.

The characters were well-textured and frequently annoying yet oddly endearing and endlessly entertaining. I unequivocally adored Silas, and I knew I would, based on this wily writer’s skills.

While the overall plot was a common one, the storylines were original, authentic, highly amusing, smirk-worthy, atomically steamy, and unpredictable. Just like every other book by Ms. Noir that I’ve been lucky enough to stumble upon. The gal has mad skills and remains near the top of my list of favorites.

About the Author

I love writing sexy, alpha men and the headstrong women they fall for.

He’s a single dad. She’s the nanny he shouldn’t want…

Chris Vaughn doesn’t want to be seen as Hollywood’s sexiest bad boy anymore.
He wants to make the movie he’s dreamed of ever since he was a child.
And the pretty beach town of Angel Sands is the perfect place to do it.

There’s one small problem. He needs a nanny for his six-year-old daughter. And fast.

Enter Chelsea Kennedy.

She’s the perfect caregiver on paper. And more than easy on the eye.
It’s a shame she left her last job under a dark cloud and she won’t tell him why.

Taking a punt on her is a risk. She’s trouble with a capital ‘T’.
But it’s not as though either of them is going to do something stupid.

Like spend long evenings falling for each other. Or long nights together tangled between his sheets.

Somebody’s going to get hurt. Maybe everybody will. But he just can’t help himself…

My Review:

This was a fun and entertaining read with lively characters and engaging storylines full of light humor and several gasp-inducing steamy bits. The writing was delightfully breezy, engaging, and easy to follow with endearing characters, adorable children, and a despisable villain. I have savored other installments of this series and have this author on my list of favorites as I idolize her word skills, smooth storytelling, and appealing writing style.

Carrie Elks writes contemporary romance with a sizzling edge. Her first book, Fix You, has been translated into eight languages and made a surprise appearance on Big Brother in Brazil. Luckily for her, it wasn’t voted out. Carrie lives with her husband, two lovely children, and a larger-than-life black pug called Plato. When she isn’t writing or reading, she can be found baking, drinking an occasional (!) glass of wine, or chatting on social media.

Keeping them safe means faking they’re a normal family road tripping with s’mores and snuggles and possibly a sniper rifle. Toss in a potty-training toddler and temptation from the woman he still craves, and it’s officially Matteo’s toughest mission.

But with danger nipping their heels, the only way to save his family may be to leave their lives for good.

Book Review: Smart Mouth (Work For It #4) by Emma Lee Jayne @SmartyPantsRom

 Smart Mouth
(Work For It #4)
by Emma Lee Jayne

Amazon  / B&N  / GP / BB

Smart Mouth, an all-new opposites-attract romantic comedy from Emma Lee Jayne, is now available.

The rockstar

There are lots of assumptions people make about rockstars. Shallow. Player. Addict. The truth? I’m none of those.

The even bigger truth…the only opinion I care about is her’s and she hates me. Her as in Gwen Matthews, my twin brother’s best friend, the unrequited love of my life. She thinks I’m a liar and a jerk which is why I pretend to be my brother when she needs help one night.

Except Gwen is a genius. Literally. So it doesn’t take her long to figure out it’s me and not my brother, but maybe, just maybe, she’s willing to give me a second chance. Because maybe when she looks at me, she only sees a rockstar with her best friend’s face, but when I look at her, I see my other half. She centers me in a way that no rhythm or line of lyric ever could.

The scientist

I have three priorities in life at the moment: finish my research, defend my dissertation, and get my Ph.D., so that I can actually figure out what I’m supposed to do with my life. Tom Mendoza won’t help me achieve any of those things. Yet I can’t help the sudden feeling that I’ve been completely wrong about him all this time.

The day we first met when we were both teenagers, I saw a glimpse of a sweet, funny boy that felt very much like a kindred spirit; awkward and full of energy and dreams. But that guy seemed to disappear and in his place was this stereotypical stupidly hot rock star that did not make sense in my world.

Being a scientist means being willing to admit when you’re wrong and reevaluating everything. I might not understand much about human behavior, but I can clearly see the tender underbelly that Tom protects. The subtle rituals he uses to stave off his anxiety. Yes, he’s ridiculously hot, but his soul just might be more beautiful than his face and I’m not sure what to do with that.

Especially when I find out that he’s in love with me.

‘Smart Mouth’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #4 in the Work For It series, Educated Romance World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

My Rating:

I stop talking when I realize I’m speaking in choppy phrases that all sound like questions. I’m a smart woman who is about to get her Ph.D., and here I am, talking to the hottest man I’ve ever met about tilapia and compost, and I can’t even do that without sounding like a moron. Ladies and gentlemen, this is why I’m still single.

My Review:

This was a fun and witty tale full of insightful observations and amusing encounters between a brilliant but socially awkward microbiology doctoral candidate and the man who has pined for her for half his life. The characters were authentic and accessible and I particularly enjoyed the character of Tom being the complete antithesis of his culture, birth order, and successful career.

The storylines were active, well-paced, and engaging with smirk-worthy writing that pulled strong visuals to my mind’s eye. There was a small amount of breath-stealing and gasp-worthy sensual steam yet the heat level was high enough to singe my eyebrows.

This was my first exposure to the clever word voodoo of Emma Lee Jayne but I definitely feel a habit forming.

by Kelly Collins

As a senator’s daughter, Kennedy Blackwell has everything, or so it seems. But on her wedding day, a shocking secret changes everything, and Kennedy’s fortunes turn on a dime. Instead of offering their unconditional support, her parents turn their backs on her, proving once and for all that her father’s goal of becoming president is more important than his own child. Forced to start over, Kennedy relies on a pact she and five friends made to each other back in junior high. She also enlists the help of the “entertainment” from her bachelorette party, a handsome handyman-by-day, exotic dancer-by-night.

Wade Roberts faces his existence one crisis at a time. Everything bad in his life has directly resulted from a poor decision or the actions of a member of the Blackwell family. So, when the senator’s daughter calls asking for help, he’s torn between assisting her or making her “pay.” Soon tangled up in the Blackwell family drama, he finds himself being framed for an unspeakable crime. Wade must step up and prove his innocence and his love for a woman who deserves more than he can offer.

Can two people who start with nothing end up with everything?

Edna had the attention span of a goldfish, and after a couple of games, she ended up dancing with everyone in those red heels. She wasn’t picky. He’d even seen her dance with some old vet’s emotional support animal.

“They say size matters.” “Not if he can lick his eyebrows.” He nearly fell off the bucket trying not to laugh.

She pressed her mouth to his for a quick smooch. “I like my kisses mixed with whiskers.” “Maybe you should kiss Edna. She’s working on a mustache and goatee.” His shoulders shook. “The woman from Joe’s in the red heels and fringe?” “That’s the one.” “I bet she felt you up like a blind woman reading braille.” He blushed. “Exactly, and Edna’s a slow reader.”

His eight pack wasn’t the only wonder she encountered that night. To say he was a handyman was an understatement… Wade was skilled on many levels… His tool belt was full of surprises too. The way he used that hammer was pure mastery.

It’s been close to fifteen years. It’s about time I got some of those honey-do projects finished. You can be hired honey.

He may look as old as a classic VW Bug, but he’s got a Porsche hidden under the hood, and when it’s ready to race, I’m all in.

My Review:

This is Kelly Collins at her cleverly amusing and smirk-worthy best. I adored this odd collection of authentic characters and was rooting for them while fully invested in their entertaining and engaging storylines from start to finish. The writing was smooth and smartly paced with delightful sparkles of wry humor and Ms. Collin’s classic snarky wit. This is a brilliant opener to a new series, although I could never tire of her Aspen Cove One Hundred chronicles either. I am eager to see what happens next for this tightly bonded gang of girlfriends.

I’d heard through the grapevine that Elizabeth was here on account of her promiscuity, but no one could provide any concrete detail. It’s not an easy task to ask a woman whether she’s a whore, and if so, what that entails, exactly.

She’s too perfect. Tart and sweet, like candy. You know it’s bad for you, but you can’t help yourself.

You’ve done a lot of dumb, stupid things, no? Well, guess what? You’re not through yet. You’re gonna do some more. Might as well hurry up and get it over with… There’s always going to be a next one.

Elizabeth was a hard person to love, and a harder person not to.

My Review:

This was a prickly read that was disconcerting and alarmingly realistic. I had a hard time liking the characters as they were rather annoying and pathological creatures, yet I was fully invested and wiggling on the hook with their diabolically addictive and unpredictable storylines.

I fall for this every time as Britney King has consistently managed to do this to me. She turns me inside out and upside down and makes me like it and scream for more. I flinched and cringed throughout perusal but could not in good conscience walk away and leave them to their own devices. This was nail-gnawing and cuticle-tearing suspense… I’ll need to wear mittens in public this week.
