He was frightfully boring. And he made me boring. We were boring together. For some reason, I didn’t feel comfortable being myself when I was around Dr. Miles. And, fine, I knew I would never be the belle of any ball. But I could be quick-witted and a decent conversationalist. There was just something about being in Dr. Miles’s presence that leeched all interesting thought from my head.

It was like having permission to stare when I’d spent a lifetime looking away.

I laughed lightly before remembering myself. I’d forgotten what this was like— being charmed by, Nicolas. I could feel him tugging the amusement out of me like a string.

My Review:

I keep trying to like period historical pieces as I loved Downton Abbey, but I struggled with this tale as constant angst is just not one of my favorite things. While I admired the feminism of the main protagonist, Eliza, I found her insecurity and emotional immaturity annoying and tiresome as her inner conflicts were pedantic and tedious. While the writing style was easy to follow, the storylines and pacing were incrementally slow, repetitive, and rather monotonous. I adored the effervescent and patient character of Nicholas but I wanted to sigh and give Eliza a kick in her bussle.

Book Review: Shoal Waters by Normandie Fischer

Shoal Waters
by Normandie Fischer

Amazon  / B&N / BB

Dementia, mad gunmen, and a yearning for something more make life difficult for the Beaufort folk in this series finale.

Georgie’s mind threatens to go walkabout, and she’d better get help soon if she’s to stop her daughter from taking over. Enter granddaughter, Jeminy, a songwriter from L.A., and Eric, her lawyer.

Jeminy hates herself and is pretty sure God does, too. There’s that huge unforgiveable sin, plus the boyfriend/manager who dumped her and lost her a music deal. Her mistakes. Her fault.

When Mother plots to tuck Nana Georgie neatly into a nursing home to gain access to Nana’s money, Jeminy hightails it out of L.A. and back to Beaufort. God may still hate her in North Carolina, but at least she’ll be on hand to protect her beloved grandmother.

Enter Eric, the lawyer hired to help Georgie protect herself–and possibly Jeminy, too. But Eric just rescued his orphaned stepson from Social Services, and while he’s adept at legal briefs and courtroom dramas, classrooms and angry second graders are brand new territory.

Guitar in hand, Jeminy tries to write songs to jumpstart her flagging career, but when someone threatens her life, she has to ask why. Could it have to do with the money missing from her bank accounts (and maybe her unstable ex)? If she prays for help, will God even listen to someone with her baggage?

With the help of the Beaufort crew, a new father and a terrified musician struggle to safeguard everyone they love, but it’s going to take more than good neighbors to show each of them the true meaning of grace.

Jeminy had always been like sunshine sneaking in under the porch eaves on a winter’s day.

My Review:

I struggled with this one as my personal preference is to avoid conservative religious themes as I find them wearisome and exasperating, and this installment featured more droning of those issues than the rest of the series combined. Given the current irksome narrowing of these hot button issues, I should have stopped reading when these complications became apparent or when the polarizing stance in opposition to my personal position on a woman’s freedom of choice first became annoying as the heavily repeated judgmental tone became increasingly tedious and tiresome and overrode the pleasure and interest I had with the other storylines.

Despite our differing views, I still found Ms. Fischer’s writing to be top-notch and emotive, and I did appreciate the perceptive and thoughtfully written story threads of an elderly woman struggling with family and memory loss, the creative use of an emetic agent against a villain, and catching up with the characters from the previous installments.

About the Author

Normandie had the best of several worlds: a Southern heritage, access to schooling in the DC area (which meant lots of cultural adventures), and several years of sculpture studies in Italy. It might have been better for her if she’d used all these opportunities more wisely, but it’s possible that the imperfect and the unwise also add fodder for the artist and the writer.

She writes Southern women’s fiction and romantic suspense from her waterfront base in coastal North Carolina, where she lives with her husband, her aging mother, two dogs and two cats.

An ancient secret hidden within a mother’s song

When young widow, Marie-Ange Norton is invited to Beauregard in France by the mysterious Monsieur Malleval to collect an inheritance, she has no choice but to accept.

But when she embarks on the voyage with her fiery-tempered traveling companion Capitaine Hugo Saintclair, little does she know what waits for her across the sea in turbulent nineteenth-century France on the eve of Napoleon’s return from exile. When she arrives, she is taken aback by Malleval’s fascination with her family – seemingly inspired by his belief they are connected to a sacred relic he’s read about in coded manuscripts by the Knights Templar.

As it becomes clear that Malleval’s obsession has driven him to madness, Marie-Ange is horrified to realize she is more the man’s prisoner than his guest. Not only that, but Hugo is the only person who might be able to help her, and he could represent a different kind of danger.

My Review:

I have reveled in Ms. Laval’s rib-tickling rom/coms but this tense historical was not what I was expecting and I struggled to keep all the nefarious factions straight while the characters were battling with each other. There were many clever elements and twists but the storylines were densely packed, complicated, and stuffed to the rafters with unlikable characters with difficult names and unfamiliar titles. I got lost, many times. The little pea in my brain was not pleased with me! This type of historical is obviously not in my wheelhouse and I grappled with a few too many secret clandestine societies to keep track of while they deceived and assaulted each other through a slowly developing plot with occasional jumps of hyperspeed attacks.

My difficulty in fully appreciating this one was obviously down to my personal tastes and interests as the premise was original, the writing was lushly descriptive, and the characters were well-developed despite most being distressingly odious. I chaff at tales that have women treated like livestock. I know it happened but the feminist in me just doesn’t enjoy the reminder.

The various groups were all thundering around the French county side in carriages and on horseback in the freezing snow and fretting about the threatened impending return of Napoleon as well as his enemies and spies, while also trying to outwit and sabotage each other in competing attempts at locating a fabled supernatural relic hidden in a crypt that dated back to the First Crusades and sparked the founding of the Knights of Templar. I felt dashes of several Indiana Jones tales as well as pinches of The Da Vinci Code, and sprinkles of Angels and Demons. And I will confess, didn’t fully grasp all the historical and religious complexities and implications of those tales either.

My Review:

I rarely write negative reviews as I generally stop reading, so keep in mind, this is just my highly unqualified opinion. But I felt all itchy and prickly reading this one – it just wasn’t doing it for me.   The storylines were all over the place and were extremely far-fetched and didn’t hold water while cast with characters who were too annoying for words, or maybe I can’t seem to find the right words to express my discontent.

The main character was painfully exasperating and working my last nerve as she was terminally naïve and living in a death spiral of gullibility while suffering a stubbornly fatal case of denial. Yet the author kept me reading, damn my insatiable curiosity and need for closure, they are a plague and will most likely be the death of me!

My friend Shalini has niggles, I have moanings, carpings, grumbles, grousings, and with this tale, I dare say I’ll go all fancy pants with remonstrances. Yet I kept reading, and I will confess – I never saw this ending coming, at all! So I was glad I hung in there, but again, this is just my highly unqualified opinion.

The perfect house or the perfect lie?

The moment my husband showed me Cliffside—a sleek and modern glass home perched on the edge of the jagged Big Sur clifftops—I fell in love. And right there and then I made a pact with myself. I am never leaving this house.

But when my husband was killed on the perilous roads leading up to the house, weeks after we moved in, I had a decision to make—leave the home I love and start a new life or stay and shut myself off from the world? I am never leaving this house.

As I pieced together my shattered life, my mind began to play tricks on me. Footsteps along the beach, leading to my home, then blood-red flowers left on my doorstep with a note that read Looking at you. So I retreated back to the safety of my glass refuge once again. I am never leaving this house.

But now, as I stare out of the towering windows of my perfect home, I know there is someone out there staring back. I know that they are watching my every move, waiting to make me pay for my past mistakes.

This pulse-racing psychological thriller from USA Today bestselling author, Arianne Richmonde, will have you hooked from the very first page. If you are a fan of The Woman in the WindowGone Girl and Netflix’s You, you will love The Wife’s House. Prepare to stay up all night!

Since my husband’s death, I’d been making foolish decisions. Buying stuff I didn’t need, not being able to follow my instincts, losing and misplacing things, my brain scatty and unfocused. I couldn’t rely on myself to do the right thing. It’s a strange feeling when you can’t trust your intuition anymore. I was a cat without whiskers, a black sky without stars.

There were several “Klinics,” though, in and around Zurich. One was a sort of “quack” place— not that I’m against alternative medicine— but when someone has stage four cancer, a colonic irrigation, suction massages, and injections of mistletoe (really?) are unlikely to do the trick.

My Review:

I struggled with this book, valiantly I might add, as I despised ALL the characters, and I do mean ALL of them.   I only had positive feelings for the dog. The human characters were either manipulative or vile beings, stone-cold sociopaths, selfishly annoying, or in the case of the main character – incredibly limited in functioning brain cells. One character had snarkily noted, “How you ever got to be an attorney, I’ll never know” I had the same thought – all the way through – how could she have been so gullible?

But then again, I couldn’t seem to help myself either. I wanted to unravel this tangled mess as I was curious to know the real secrets buried beneath all the sinister maneuvering and deceit, and I had a feeling those secrets would be huge. While the pacing of the vast majority of this tense tale was agonizingly slow, the last few chapters zipped and pinged with action-packed and clever twists and reveals that almost made up for the disappointing lead-up, almost.   The wily author did keep me reading with cunning elements and an intriguing premise, but the framing and tedious execution were a disappointment and could have been so much better.

I’m worried. A man packing a woman’s bag with what he feels is deemed necessary can only lead to disaster.

My Review:

I struggled, and valiantly I might add, but this story just wasn’t my cup of Darjeeling as it was a full-on angst fest with painful and OTT wallowing, and angst is not, and will never be, my friend. As such, the first 30% was bordering on torture, but that was nothing compared to the tragedies that later befell the deeply mired characters and tossed the story into a listless stall. Sigh, the storylines were heaving with devastation, loss, family dysfunction, depression, and keening grief. However, I was rewarded for making it to the end as the satisfying HEA that was all the sweeter.

From the New York Times bestselling author RaeAnne Thayne comes a brand-new novel for fans of Debbie Macomber and Susan Wiggs. RaeAnne Thayne tells the story of an emotional homecoming that brings hope and healing to three generations of women.

The life Olivia Harper always dreamed of isn’t so dreamy these days. The 16-hour workdays are unfulfilling and so are things with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when she hears that her estranged mother, Juliet, has been seriously injured in a car accident, Liv has no choice but to pack up her life and head home to beautiful Cape Sanctuary on the Northern California coast.

It’s just for a few months—that’s what Liv keeps telling herself. But the closer she gets to Cape Sanctuary, the painful memories start flooding back: Natalie, her vibrant, passionate older sister who downward-spiraled into addiction. The fights with her mother who enabled her sister at every turn. The overdose that took Natalie, leaving her now-teenaged daughter, Caitlin, an orphan.

As Liv tries to balance her own needs with those of her injured mother and an obstinate, resentful fifteen-year-old, it becomes clear that all three Harper women have been keeping heartbreaking secrets from one another. And as those secrets are revealed, Liv, Juliet, and Caitlin will see that it’s never too late—or too early—to heal family wounds and find forgiveness.

We’re all afraid, Olivia… You can’t make it through life without it. The trick is figuring out that the thing you need is just on the other side of that fear. The only way you can reach it is by going right through the center of it.

 My Review:

While the premise of the story was interesting and topical, I struggled with this book and not that the writing wasn’t up to par, as the author’s writing style was easy to follow. My issue is more to do with my personal preference as high angst and constant discord just isn’t my jam, and this tale was heavily loaded with both internal and interpersonal conflicts as well as annoyingly stubborn characters. The storylines were relevant and relatable yet developed ever so slowly with considerable repetition and retreading of the five characters’ inner turmoil and protracted grief, which had me tapping my little foot while waiting for the tale to progress and the storylines to advance. It was at the 90% mark when all systems finally hit their boiling point and – Whoa Nelly! The secrets were uncovered and feelings were revealed at a rather furious and frantic rate as I thankfully hurdled toward that highly prized HEA conclusion.

How far do we go for love when worlds collide?

Clare Harrison has always felt invisible to everyone other than her grandmother. While she has everything she wants in her career, something is missing: someone to love and a family of her own.

Pete Fitzgerald has family. Too much. The Fitzgeralds are loud, intrusive and always trying to set him up with the daughters of family friends. As he completes his Ph.D. and contemplates moving back to his hometown, he’s determined to meet ‘the one’ and hopes she can cope with his overbearing family.

When Clare and Pete meet, they are instantly drawn to one another. They want the same things in life, but as Pete’s family unwittingly intrudes on his relationship and Clare’s worries for her grandmother’s health mount, their worlds begin to seem further apart than either of them thought.

Can they juggle the needs of their families to give them everything they always wanted, or are there too many differences to overcome?

The Things We Always Wanted is a romantic prequel novella to the Café Chronicles series by award-winning author, Megan Mayfair.

He’d never been sure why there was a mirror in their office. Most of his colleagues usually looked like they’d gotten dressed in the dark and had never seen a hairbrush before, but it was coming in handy to check he didn’t have anything between his teeth…

There was something a little ‘jumble sale’ about the whole office. Was that a sword crafted out of foam sticking out a milk crate? What on earth went on in this office?

It had been rather remarkable, but not long after Granny Fitzgerald passed away, Sharon had turned up at their house with a cat under her arm, swearing it was Granny Fitzgerald reincarnated. Or ‘reincatinated’ as their brother Luke had suggested. Despite Luke’s joking, oddly enough, the cat did look like his late grandmother. As much as a feline could look like a human, that was.

This was a sweet and predictable novella that was chaste enough for my elderly mother’s Sunday School Book Club. The characters were likable and varied with a large family and open-ended storylines to set the stage for a new series.

I think for women, though, we can look at a sexy man with ripped abs and bulging biceps and appreciate his beauty, but if he came up to us in a bar and said, “Hey, babe. Wanna bang one out? My mom’s out of town, and I can buy a twelver if you got money.” Well, let’s just say not many of us would take up that offer, no matter how hot the abs.

My Review:

Other than a few sparkling glimmers of clever smirk-worthy levity and a handful steamy sensual scenes which were mostly daydreams, this was a rather exasperating read full of annoying characters who spent most of their time in conflict while ludicrously doing and saying the exact opposite of what they wanted or were thinking. I have previously enjoyed several of Ms. Pamfiloff’s cleverly written romantic comedies, but this was a huge miss for me. At least it was mercifully quick and short and well, just ridiculous. I have learned a valuable lesson – I need to stick to her witty rom-coms.

I had it all. Truly, I had the perfect life. One filled with happiness and love where the bright smiles of my gorgeous wife and my beautiful daughter greeted me every day. I was a lucky man…

Until I lost it all.

Sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can still see them. My two angels still shining with their never-ending beauty. But those visions always lead me to darkness…

The moment when I find myself alone again. The pain is real and the emptiness inside me only grows with each passing day.

Time will heal me, they say. But they’ve never lived through the loss I have. They’ve never felt the excruciating pain of what it means to have your heart shattered into a million pieces.

They don’t know the guilt I carry.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother waking up every morning. But if I let go, I let go of them. And their memory is all I have left.

I know I need to move on. I know it’s time to Just Breathe Again…

The problem is I didn’t know where to start.

Somehow, telling my mother that the sweet man she was referring to had devoured me with deep penetrating kisses only forty-eight hours ago then dismissed me like yesterday’s garbage didn’t sound like such a great idea.

You forget that this is a small town and that people talk. You can’t buy nonfat yogurt from the market without every person in town gossiping about how it’s about time you notice your ass has gotten bigger.

She would tell me that when I smiled at her, it made her tummy tickle.

My Review:

This book just wasn’t my preferred cup of Darjeeling. I struggled, valiantly I must add, as I have read and enjoyed several books by this author and knew eventually she would pull the depressed and wallowing character’s cranium from his rectum, but alas, it took far too long for my taste. I am no fan of constant conflict, repetitive cycles, or high angst, and unfortunately, that would describe 80% of this story.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it was poorly written, it wasn’t. My rating is purely a reflection of my personal satisfaction, and regrettably, this book fell short of my definition of enjoyable entertainment. While there were still things I did enjoy such as an interesting premise, dual POV, and eventual sweet and steamy HEA; Ms. Harms clever trademark humor made only scant appearances and not only did she deploy several of my highest ranking pet peeves in her storylines, she did so repeatedly. I was not a happy camper and experiencing an escalating level of exasperation and sighing with displeasure and high dudgeon until I neared the 85% mark when my mood vastly improved with that long-awaited skull extraction and sudden bursts of sweet romance and sensual steam which culminated into a fond HEA to save the day.

I am an Illinois girl, born and raised. Simple and true. I love the little things; they truly mean the most. I may have a slight addiction to my new Keurig—oh my, that thing is a godsend. And so fast too. I have two children who truly are the greatest part of my days, and their faces never fail to put a smile on my face. I have been married to my best friend for seventeen years and looking forward to many more.

I am one of those authors that adore my readers. I love to hear from you. After all, it is because of each one of you that I continue to write.
