Title: Born in Flames
Series: Born in Flames, #1
Author: Candace Knoebel
Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.
Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out.
In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?
If you like magic and dragons, Born in Flames is a book for you. The book started strong and maintained a steady pace. Although there were some parts that I personally didn’t enjoy as much, it was needed to build up the characters. The story follows the life of Aurora and her best friend, Fenn. Both of them neither had their memories before they found each other.
Aurora was a likeable character. She was a strong and independent character trying to look for her past. She did have some insecurities and she was a bit withdrawn at times. She had always known she was different than most people, but she could never exactly point how she was different…aside from being able to withstand fire. She was stubborn but very determined and that made her character so believable and easy to relate to. The only thing I didn’t like about her was how she was angry all the time, but that could also be because a part of her memory was missing. She didn’t know who she was and for someone as young as her, that could be confusing and could cause a struggle within you. She was definitely a dragon, though, an intense one.
Fenn was my favorite character. He was the steady rock, the one who would do anything to keep Aurora safe. He was the level-headed one. To Aurora’s eyes, he was perfect, but to the reader’s eyes, you could see he wasn’t. He was realistic. He made some bad decisions and even admitted he was wrong. Even having secrets of his own, he was very loyal to Aurora. He was dedicated to her and to finding out their past. There wasn’t anything I could find that I didn’t like about him and even though he made mistakes and bad decisions, he always tried to fix them and make things right.
I loved their relationship and those small cute moments they had. They grew up with each other and had a lot of history and I liked that a lot, too. Born in Flames is a book I’d recommend to those who enjoy magic, dragons, and adventure. It left me wanting for more and I’m looking forward to reading the next instalment.
