Title: After I’m Gone
Author: Laura Lippman
Genre: Mystery – Thriller
When Felix Brewer meets nineteen-year-old Bernadette “Bambi” Gottschalk at a Valentine’s Dance in 1959, he charms her with wild promises, some of which he actually keeps. Thanks to his lucrative-if not all legal-businesses, she and their three little girls live in luxury. But on the Fourth of July, 1976, Bambi’s comfortable world implodes when Felix, newly convicted and facing prison, mysteriously vanishes.
Though Bambi has no idea where her husband-or all of his money-might be, she suspects one woman does: his devoted young mistress, Julie. When Julie disappears ten years to the day that Felix went on the lam, everyone assumes she’s left to join her old lover-until her remains are eventually found in a secluded wooded park.
Now, twenty-six years after Julie went missing, Roberto “Sandy” Sanchez, a retired Baltimore detective working cold cases for some extra cash, is investigating her murder. What he discovers is a tangled web of bitterness, jealously, resentment, greed, and longing stretching over three decades that connects five intriguing women: a faithful wife, a dead mistress, and three very different daughters. And at the center is the man who, though long gone, has never been forgotten by the five women who loved him: the enigmatic Felix Brewer.
Somewhere between the secrets and lies connecting past and present, Sandy will find the truth. And when he does, no one will ever be the same.
“Life went on, with or without you, Felix. What else could it do?“
This is the first book I’ve read by Laura Lippman and I have to say I was surprised to find a liking to it. I rarely read mysteries and thrillers as I prefer watching it in movies instead, but I’m so glad I read this book. After I’m Gone was so masterfully written with beautiful and believable characters and a very well crafter plot.
I was intrigued by Felix and the women that surrounded his life. They grabbed my attention and I was gripping the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next. Lippman’s characters were compelling and they each did their part in showing an in depth glimpse into human nature.
After I’m Gone was written in a way that absorbs you straight into the story and demands all your attention until you finish the book. The story was strategically planned out to slowly give out clues that gripped me to the point that I was flipping page after page until 4 in the morning, not wanting to put the book down until I knew what happened. I also loved the way Lippman went back and forth between past and present that slowly helped shed some light on the big mystery.
In summary, After I’m Gone was an excellent read. It might even be the best read I’ve had in a long time and I’m not usually a big fan of mystery. Laura Lippman just made it to my top ten favotire authors. Whether you’re a fan of mysteries or not, I highly recommend After I’m Gone. You will devour the book in a few hours, I’m sure.
