Misty Mornings at The Potting Shed
(The Potting Shed #3)
by Jenny Kane

Welcome back to The Potting Shed! As Maddie and Sabi re-open the doors of their family-run garden centre. Business is booming, and it’s time to give back to the community that has kept The Potting Shed afloat, by opening the Forget-Me-Not dementia café.

But, as the doors to the café open, Sabi is offered the chance of a lifetime, that could take her away from The Potting Shed for weeks, café manager Jo’s frail, elderly mother is taken ill, and Maddie’s partner, Ed, takes a job in a faraway city just when Maddie needs him more than ever. A new member of staff is desperately required – who will join Sara, Jo, and Ivan as the busy autumn season fast approaches?

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Tristan groaned. ‘I think that must be a record.’ ‘A record?’ ‘Offending you within ten minutes of being with you.’ ‘Don’t be silly, you’d offended me much quicker than that.’ Sara rolled her eyes.

… it occurred to me that if someone doesn’t put you straight on how to treat women, you’re either going to die alone after a string of disastrous relationships, or you’ll be locked up on a sexual harassment charge, sitting in a cell bewildered at your situation.

I’d rather we lived on toast and fish fingers for the rest of our lives than you be unhappy every day.’

I can’t even pronounce the coffee she has. And oat milk! I mean, whoever milked an oat? The world’s gone mad.

Billy is the perfect example of how to grow old disgracefully, but with style.

My Review:

This was a gentle and realistic installment that continued on from the previous installments with the storylines and a few additional characters and read much like a television serial. There were multiple story threads with real-world issues, thorough and colorful descriptions, and amusing observations tucked into each page. The characters were knowable, likable, and so well-detailed that I would recognize them if I passed them on the street.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

“I never told you to loudly broadcast our personal lives to the public. I think that esteemed lady might need smelling salts,” Mona said, grinning and looking over her shoulder at Robert.

The voice. You sound like tinkling bells in a breeze.

“I am looking for discontented men who have very little impulse control with Napoleon-like egos.” Violet teased, “That describes half the men I know.”

My Review:

Ms. Keam writes cleverly staged and maddeningly paced cozy mysteries that incorporate real historical figures of the time into her tales. I always seem to find myself falling into a Goggle wormhole while researching these larger-than-life personalities, but none larger than her fictional main character of Mona Moon. I adore Mona Moon, who is classy and sassy as well as independently wealthy. She is exactly the type of woman I want to be.

About the Author

One thing Miss Abigail loves to do as an author is to write real people and events into her stories. “I am a student of history and love to insert historical information into my mysteries. My goal is to entertain my readers, but if they learn a little something along the way—well, then we are both happy. I certainly learn a lot from my research, and I hope my readers come away with a new appreciation of beekeeping from my Josiah Reynolds Mysteries.”

(Work For It #7)
by Amanda Pennington

Smart Move, an all-new grumpy sunshine sweet romance by Amanda Pennington, is LIVE in Kindle Unlimited!

Ivy Lunden is Team Keep Things Casual…

I am Toby Azumah’s opposite in every way. I’m a pessimist; he’s an optimist. I’m into art; he’s into sports. Still, I’m highly entertained by our flirtationship.

When he finally talks me into a date, everything goes wrong. Chaos descends on my orderly life when my mother falls and needs nearly round-the-clock care. Add in my nosy neighbor, and my peace of mind has been turned inside out.

When Toby, Mr. Best-Case Scenario himself, offers to help, I’m skeptical. A relationship with him would only make things more chaotic, right? Or maybe Toby is the real deal, and giving him a chance is a smart move after all.

Toby Azumah is Team Happily Ever After…

I’ve wanted to take the mysterious, beautiful Ivy Lunden to dinner ever since we met, and I’m confident she just needs a little time to warm up to the idea of us. But nothing goes according to my daydreams.

Despite a no-show date, some flirty texts, and the fierce ways she protects herself and her mom, I see through the chaos and smoke to the real Ivy. The Ivy she rarely shows to the world.

How can I convince her I’m making the smart move and playing for keeps?

‘Smart Move’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #7 in the Work For It series, Educated Romance World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

My house was a simple, two-story brick home, and it was filled with everything that brought me peace: calming white walls, warm lighting, art supplies, and a box of wine.

When in doubt, always play dumb. Petty people will feel good thinking they know more than you, and helpful people will tend to over-explain so you’ll know even more at the end than you did at the beginning. Or maybe it’ll just buy you more time so you can brace yourself for what’s coming next. Playing dumb is a win-win.

Despite the cold, despite the fact he wore only a flimsy polo t-shirt for his work uniform, his skin was a furnace. I felt the heat instantly. It was one of the greatest injustices in life that men hogged all the genes for body heat, and women froze until they got menopausal hot flashes.

“Thanks for making me sound pathetic.” I silently promised my ego it would live to see another day.

I had too little emotional bandwidth for everything demanding my attention today.

My Review:

This was a fun read. The writing style was engaging and easy to follow and kept me pleasantly entertained. I enjoyed this couple, they were endearing, uniquely appealing, and interesting to me. Their flirty banter was clever and their inner musings and personal observations were amusing and witty. I had never heard of synesthesia and was impressed with the author’s grasp and perceptive insights into such a complicated condition.

 Can’t Fight It
(Lessons Learned #3)
by Allie Winters

Amazon  / B&N / BB

Can’t Fight It, an all-new friends-to-lovers college romance from Allie Winters, is LIVE in Kindle Unlimited!

Mousy bookworm. Psychology nerd. The kind of girl who constantly sticks her foot in her mouth.

The last thing I am is the type to attract the intimidating, motorcycle-riding guy in the apartment next door. Especially when that mouth of mine gets me in trouble and he overhears me talk smack about him…

So no one’s more surprised than me when he shows up as a participant in the psych study I’m running on campus. Or when he generously offers me some much-needed self-defense lessons. Or when we grow closer than I thought possible. It turns out some people aren’t at all what they seem at first glance. They can actually be everything you never knew you wanted in a man.

The thing is, Austin Langford is so far out of my league, it’s laughable. Muscled boxers don’t go for nobodies like me. I need to forget about this one-sided attraction.

Even when it feels like I can’t fight it.

Can’t Fight It’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #3 in the Lessons Learned series, Educated Romance World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Book Review: Bear With Me Now by Katie Shepard @YTCShepard @BerkleyRomance

Bear With Me Now
by Katie Shepard

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP / BB

After being hospitalized for panic attacks two years after his mother’s death, charitable foundation executive Teagan van Zijl is dragged by his sister to a wilderness therapy retreat in Montana. Lost in the woods, Teagan nearly gets eaten by a bear but is saved by an angel in muddy hiking boots—the program’s handywoman, Darcy Albano, that is. After spending the summer with Darcy, Teagan realizes he doesn’t want to return to New York without her. He hires Darcy as his sober companion—a position he doesn’t actually need filled and for which Darcy is completely unqualified—hoping she can help him figure out how to move forward. But once they get to the city, all Teagan can think of is how to confess the truth while keeping her in his life.

Darcy Albano thought she was going to work as a wilderness guide when she was hired on the camp staff, but ended up a handywoman instead—only the latest screwing-over she’s endured since her ex stole her car and her parents ruined her credit score. But Teagan van Zijl is the silver lining she didn’t expect to appear—clearly going through something but willing to commit to Darcy’s unique brand of wilderness education as the cure for what ails him. They form an unlikely bond based on the unexpected support they provide each other. Darcy never imagined staying in the city, but with Teagan’s unshakeable belief in her abilities, anything seems possible.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

He had a dimple in his left cheek, and the lopsidedness of his mouth made it appear that he was holding half a smile in reserve rather than fully committing to the expression.

Teagan is not a horny mistake. I am not going to lay his pipe, even though I totally could, and that would probably fix all his substance abuse issues, add five years to his life, and show him the very face of God. No. I’m helping him. Therapeutically.

She should have said something, Darcy decided. Next time she’d make a scene. She didn’t really mind making a scene, and she sensed that the women at this event would consider it a tragedy if the entire evening passed and nobody made a scene. It might as well be Darcy.

So she twined her arms around his neck and turned her face up to his. “If this is talking, I can’t wait to see you argue,” she said.

You’re that first cup of coffee that gets me out of bed in the morning. You’re the song on my playlist for the drive home. You’re every good thing that I promise myself to get through the day.

My Review:

I enjoyed this tale, the characters were all of the total mess variety, yet authentically complicated while tickling my gray matter to know more about them. The storylines and writing style were lively and humorous with perceptive descriptions and situations that put vivid images behind my eyes and a frequent grin on my face.

I write love stories. I write about people whose jagged edges happen to match up with someone else’s. I write love stories because I wanted to make happy endings for people who are afraid they won’t get them.

I studied Soviet history and worked in human rights law before burning way, way out and achieving professional tranquility as a simple country bankruptcy lawyer. It’s just as exciting as it sounds!

I live in Texas with my husband, kids, and elderly rescue cat, but am often found hiking in the mountains of Montana or the virtual woods of Thedas.

Covert in Cairo
(A Fiona Figg & Kitty Lane Mystery #2)
by Kelly Oliver

Amazon  / B&N / Apple / GP / BB

Cairo. December 1917.

Following a tip-off from notorious spy Fredrick Fredricks, Fiona Figg and Kitty Lane of British Intelligence find themselves in the hustle and bustle of Egypt. But ancient mummies aren’t the only bodies buried in the tombs of Cairo.

When a young French archeologist is found dead in a tomb in the desert with his head bashed in, and an undercover British agent goes missing, the threat moves closer to home.

As they dig deeper, soon Fiona and Kitty uncover a treasure trove of suspects, including competing excavators, jealous husbands, secret lovers, and belligerent spies! Fiona wonders if the notorious Fredrick Fredricks could be behind the murders? Or is the plot even more sinister?

One thing is clear – If Fiona and Kitty can’t catch the killer, they might end up sharing a sarcophagus with Nefertiti.

With humor as dry as the Arabian desert, and pacing as fast as a spitting camel, Fiona and Kitty are back in another sparkling adventure, this time in WW1 Egypt.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Clifford fancied himself a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Sir Lancelot.

I’d learned from experience that mustache and trousers opened many doors closed to corsets and skirts— although sometimes skirts had advantages too. If novelist Robert Hichens was to be believed, the real secrets of Egypt lay behind the closed harem doors, accessible only to women and eunuchs.

Clifford could talk a donkey into giving up its tail.

My Review:

This has been a fun yet brain-teasing series to follow as the mysteries and clues are well-plotted, active, and adventurous. The main character is a highly determined and cynical file clerk who is itching to become a full-fledged spy although she is tethered to an unlikely team consisting of a gentlemanly and rather gullible agent who is rather adorable, and a spiky young woman who presents as a giggly school girl with a cute dog but underneath is a steely young woman who can kick butt and “foot fight.” Their current assignment has them on a cruise ship then traipsing through Egypt, riding camels and donkeys, and meeting up with Laurence of Arabia and other notable archaeologists who are plundering the desert. I enjoyed their amusing adventures and was kept guessing as to which of several villains was behind the murders they kept stumbling upon.

Kelly Oliver grew up in the Northwest, Montana, Idaho, and Washington states. Her maternal grandfather was a forest ranger committed to saving the trees, and her paternal grandfather was a logger hell-bent on cutting them down. On both sides, her ancestors were some of the first settlers in Northern Idaho. In her own unlikely story, Kelly went from eating a steady diet of wild game shot by her dad to becoming a vegetarian while studying philosophy and pondering animal minds. Competing with peers who’d come from private schools and posh families “back East,” Kelly’s working-class backwoods grit has served her well. And much to her parent’s surprise, she’s managed to feed and clothe herself as a professional philosopher.

When she’s not writing mysteries, Kelly Oliver is a Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. She earned her B.A. from Gonzaga University and her Ph.D. from Northwestern University. She is the author of thirteen scholarly books, ten anthologies, and over 100 articles, including work on campus rape, reproductive technologies, women and the media, film noir, and Alfred Hitchcock. Her work has been translated into seven languages, and she has published an op-ed on loving our pets in The New York Times. She has been interviewed on ABC television news, the Canadian Broadcasting Network, and various radio programs.

Kelly lives in Nashville with her husband, Benigno Trigo, and her furry family, Mischief and Mayhem.

I’ve wanted my best friend forever.

We’ve vowed not to cross the line, but Nina leaves no doubt she craves my touch. I’ve reined us both in, keeping a distance as Nina gets off on satisfying her lovers’ hottest fantasies.

But what about hers?

It’s a question I pose one wild night drenched in too much champagne. She makes a list, and now I’m hellbent on helping her fill each of her deliciously dirty fantasies.

Even the ones she’s afraid to admit.

Honey Do is a scorching hot standalone m/f erotic romance with a little m/f/m/m treat. If you like friends-to-lovers and menage, this one’s for you. This story contains no cheating and an HEA is guaranteed!

…there’s never a shortage of couples looking to spice up their relationship. Just call me the spice girl.

“Good?” Another laugh escapes. “Is chocolate lava cake good? Is fancy champagne good? Are multiple orgasms good?” Josh lifts an eyebrow. “These feel like trick questions.”

I’m not even sure what he’s asking, but I’d let him lick jelly from my ear if he wanted.

My Review:

This sizzled or at least simmered on every page with writing so erotic my Kindle seemed to steam over, or maybe that was the perspiration dripping off of me during perusal. Nina was such a sensual creature she was porn star material, and her bucket list certainly was.

Eyes on the Road

by Karen C. Whalen

Many businesses in Spruce Ridge, Colorado hire temporary international workers during the hectic ski season. One temp, Jaana Ivanov from Estonia, is found dead in her car at the bottom of a cliff, but the car crash was not an accident. Jaana didn’t just take her eyes off the road. She was murdered. Delaney Morran often feels vulnerable herself as the lone female tow truck driver in town, so when the victim’s sister asks Delaney to help find the killer, Delaney eyes everyone with suspicion. Delaney may not be the best at towing vehicles, but she’s pretty good at digging up clues.

It was weird that we were joking around a minute ago, and now we were witnesses to this loss of life and serious moment. My moral compass was pointing a big guilty arrow at my chest, and I felt ashamed for staring.

Axle was shy with girls and a nine on the one-to-ten immature scale.

I was facing another sleepless night. I had yet to climb down from stress mountain.

My Review:

I’m late to the party as this is book number three for Delaney, the designer heels shoe obsessed tow truck driver, but it was my introduction to the series and its crafty creator Karen C. Whalen. I enjoyed her writing style, it was breezy, easy to follow, and laced together with humorous yet insightful observations and inner musings. There was more than one mystery to solve and I wasn’t anywhere close in my personal attempts at sleuthing, looks like I’ll have to stick to reading about such adventures, wearing flats, and driving my Prius.

Karen C. Whalen is the author of two mystery series for The Wild Rose Press: the Dinner Club Mysteries featuring Jane Marsh, an empty nester who hosts a gourmet dinner club, and the Tow Truck Mysteries starring Delaney Moran, a super feminine shoe-a-holic who drives a tow truck. Both are about strong friendships and family ties set in Colorado. She worked for many years as a paralegal at a law firm in Denver and had been a columnist and regular contributor to The National Paralegal Reporter magazine. She loves to host dinner clubs, entertain friends, ride bicycles, hike in the mountains, and read cozy murder mysteries.

She’s feisty. Fierce. And trapped in the elevator of a building I own.

So I climb down the shaft determined to distract her. My tools aren’t the kind on a toolbelt, but I get the job done, cooling Skye’s rage as we heat up this tin box hanging two stories off the ground.

The hot young med student has good reasons to be pissed, and better ones for dodging relationships. Why should she trust a stranger 14 years older to know what she needs?

But the sexy spitfire captivates me, and it’s clear Skye’s hungry for my touch.

Time to prove not all men are jerks. Especially one with a few wicked tricks up his sleeve.
