Low brow meets high brow in a literary love story. Can an emotionally-stunted literary novelist and a vivacious romance writer find their happily-ever after? Even when she becomes more successful than he? Love Literary Style spoofs romantic comedy tropes, winks at literary pretensions and pokes fun at book publishing. Like Legally Blonde only in the literary world. Inspired by the author’s New York Times article “Masters in Chick Lit.” A sparkling romantic comedy for fans of the Rosie Project.

Favorite Quotes:

Ramona was a fan of paranormal romances… It seemed odd that someone who liked to read about werewolf sex could accuse her of writing unrealistically.

If you want imperfect, why bother reading romance?   You can simply go to a singles’ bar and flirt with a guy who picks his teeth with a knife.

To Aaron, all the coffee shops seemed similar.   They all had too-clever names.   (This one was called Brewed Awakening.)   They all hung jarring amateur art on the walls and employed scary-looking baristas whose bare arms bloomed with tattoos or whose ears bristled with piercings. He would much rather pick up a Styrofoam coffee at a convenience store.

Emma might like to believe she had a soft side but she was mostly sharp elbows, sharp fingernails, and especially sharp tongue.

He noticed she ignored her drink. He didn’t blame her. It looked like a glass of whale spit.

Guys like that are always womanizers. Hell, if I looked like him, I’d be a womanizer too.   Lucky for my wife, I look like a Brillo pad with legs and a moustache.

Naturally you’re hoping she has depth. But most gorgeous girls are like beautifully wrapped presents. When you open them up, all you get is packing peanuts.

My Review:

Love Literary Style was my first taste of Ms. Gillespie’s gift for words and I am an instant fangirl of her clever humor, keen observations, and crisp style. I maintained a near constant smile and occasionally chirped as I read. Her delightfully odd and flawed characters bring new meaning to the words quirky, endearing, and indelibly peculiar. I adored the amusing storyline as much as I did her characters. The writing was smart, humorous, engrossing, brightly detailed, and highly entertaining.   When my reading was rudely interrupted, I remained mentally engaged with the protagonists while completing other tasks, which I hurried through as quickly as possible to get back to the book. I adored every sentence and mourned reaching the satisfying conclusion as I would happily spend the next month with these colorful and nuanced characters.
