Ben Walton is the guy everyone can turn to. He’s been a shoulder to cry on and a helping hand for all his friends as they’ve each met the love of their life and embarked upon their happily-ever-after.

He’s the only one who’s still single. He lost the first and only love of his life when he was still only eighteen years old. He never thought he’d get Charlotte back, and he never thought he’d want another woman.

He should have learned by now—never say never. He hasn’t heard from Charlotte in months, but he believes that she meant it when she said she was coming back—to the lake and to him. Even though he could never see himself with another woman, there is another woman who could happily see herself with him. He hired Angel to run the lodge for him. They have so much in common and she’s a beautiful woman—but she’s not Charlotte.

If you’re reading this, I assume that you’ve been waiting for Ben’s happily-ever-after for a while. I hope you’ll enjoy seeing him finally find the happiness he so deserves.

The Summer Lake series follows a group of friends from a small lakeside town in the California hills. They have kept in touch over the years and now, in their early thirties, their lives are drawing them back to Summer Lake and to each other.

This book is intended for adult readers 18+

**************************

Each Summer Lake Romance can be read as a standalone book – no cliff hangers here! Each book contains one couple’s story. However, they are best read in order to get full enjoyment of the underlying story and friendships.

Favorite Quotes:

There’s plenty of times in life when you want something for so long that by the time you finally get it, it just doesn’t suit you anymore.

We should live like there’s no tomorrow. Especially since we can never make up for all the yesterdays we lost.

I’ve not come back to change your life, just to see if I can fit into it.

My Review:

I have always adored the character of Ben and have carried a torch and a soft spot for him while reading every single book of this engaging series. Ben was such a kind, thoughtful, and gentle soul and it squeezed my heart that he remained alone and never got the girl, I was always curious about him as his story didn’t surface for quite some time.   After losing the love of his life as a teenager, Ben had spent half his life hoping and waiting for her to return, although as the years went by, he had grown numb and afraid to hope. He had diverted all his energies toward building up his family’s resort and providing a sympathetic ear or helping hand to his friends and employees. Ben was always the first to volunteer and was the go-to guy among his friends. He kept his distance from romance, although he was always ready and willing to offer aid and insight to his friends when they were having trouble with their relationships.

I was thrilled that Ben’s story was finally getting ink, as the poor man was the most deserving from any among his peer group of an HEA with his soul mate. The writing was emotive and rife with tension, turmoil, and angst. Given their unfortunate history, I expected some retreading of old pain as Ben and Charlotte attempted to make their way back to each other, however, as angst is not one of my favorite things, I was more than a bit dismayed with the overwhelming volume combined with indecision, self-doubt, and waffling that circled the same troublesome issues, but that is just my personal taste.  I grew increasing frustrated with Charlotte and wanted to pop her with my kindle.   Everyone seemed to be weighing in with their opinions, yet few seemed to be listening to what Ben wanted for himself, least of all Charlotte. A beautiful co-worker who had designs of her own for the sweet teddy bear whom I had dubbed Gentle Ben, further complicated the situation. I lived for the final quarter of the book as Ben’s dreams turned a corner toward his “Forever and Always.”   Sigh. Finally, and it was worth the agony as I will always carry a torch for Ben.

About the Author

Hi, I’m SJ. A coffee addict, lover of chocolate and drinker of good red wines. I’m a lost soul and a hopeless romantic. Reading and writing are necessary parts of who I am. Though perhaps not as necessary as coffee! I can drink coffee without writing, but I can’t write without coffee.

I grew up loving romance novels, my first boyfriends were book boyfriends, but life intervened, as it tends to do, and I wandered down the paths of nonfiction for many years. My life changed completely a couple of years ago and I returned to Romance to find my escape.

I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life. My favorite romances are happy escapes with a focus on fun, friendships, and happily-ever-afters, just like the ones I write.

These days I live in beautiful Montana, the last best place. If I’m not reading or writing you’ll find me just down the road in the park – Yellowstone. I have deer, eagles, and the occasional bear for company, and I like it that way :0)

Excellent review. I like Ben already and don’t know a thing about him!! …and the author’s bio, “I write ‘Sweet N Steamy’ stories because to me there is enough angst and darkness in real life.”….sounds familiar to me!! 🙂
