Favorite Quotes:

“She’d overreacted, because whenever Merk came near, she practically ovulated in hopes of having him stay with her.”

“He’s like the black sheep of a very bad family.”

“Merk stayed with her, comforted her, and healed her.  He’d done more for her than she’d done for herself.  He kept her moving forward, even dragging her along at times.”

“He was a wildcard.  Unpredictable, unreadable, unemotional.  She lowered her gaze, knowing she was being unfair.  Merk had emotions, an excess of feelings, and every single one was aimed at her.”

“He wanted to take everything away from you, because he knew hurting you would kill me.  Desi… you’re the only good thing I’ve got.  I won’t let him destroy you.”

My Review:

This is my first time reading this author and while starting the series near the end may have put me at a disadvantage, the book was marketed as a stand-alone and I was able to piece it together without too much confusion, but I am sure it would have been easier to follow had I read the previous installments.  Many of my initial thoughts about the plot were incorrect.  Looking at the cover and title, I assumed the character was going into prison rather than coming out.  Then I assumed he was after revenge and retribution for being turned in – nope – shucks – 0 for 2!  I was captivated by this moody, taut, steamy, and suspenseful storyline.  Ms. Kayn is highly skilled in maintaining tension, misdirection, intrigue, and emotive writing.

We have two damaged and broken people who were thrown together years before by deplorable events, separated and each thinking of the other for 12 years, then find themselves in the same orbit again with the same horrible circumstances bending back to find them.  Given their histories and personalities, I didn’t expect to care about the characters as much as I did, yet I fell into their story soon after beginning, and held on by my fingernails all the way through to the satisfying conclusion.  Although, I do find myself in need of a spa day after holding all that tension.

The door to the room swung open. Merk stepped back, keeping his hand on the handle of his nine millimeter.
A woman entered the room and Merk’s reason for coming with Jacko stood right beside him. Her dark green eyes, a color he’d only seen once before, swept the room and settled on the man running the show. Merk absorbed the changes in the woman within three seconds.
At least five foot eight inches, stacked with a rack that only encouraged him to glance down and ogle her firm, solid ass, she confidently stood in a room filled with disappointment, tension, and smoke without blinking her long eyelashes. He stayed in position, giving nothing away of the turmoil tightening his gut. It’d been thirteen years since he’d laid eyes on her.
That night, barely old enough to have tits, she’d gazed up at him in trust. Then he shot a man and fear entered her eyes.
The Feds claimed a witness identified him as the killer. He’d known without a doubt, the girl turned him in. The judge wouldn’t release any identifying details, because the child in question was a minor. However, that night in the basement, the little girl had voluntarily given her name.
He’d spent 12 years incarcerated for murder and every day since, Desi’s eyes haunted him. He wanted those lost years locked behind bars back.
